And like a poof at the fingertips Keyser Soze did that one time, Chael Sonnen is a babyface, chasing his championship dream once again. The clock is ticking and realistically the last title fight he will ever be in has been booked…unless he defeats Jon Jones on April 27th, that is. The underdog with the meanest bark of all is the underdog yet again, but this time his bite and formidable interviewing skills will be showcased for a few months on The Ultimate Fighter. The crowd won’t be as divided as when he fought Anderson, this time Chael will have the majority of fans behind him when he makes that walk to the cage, and they will be waving like the Stars and Stripes in the wind.
The closest thing Chael has to a major title is a hastily FedEx’d WEC middleweight belt with Paulo Fihlo on the return address, and that’s a damn shame. He’s given his life to the sport over the last fifteen years and he makes people care about the fight. If this is Chael’s swan song, then **** it, I’ll watch. I was disappointed when this matchup was revealed to me, but this prophetic promo for Chael Vs. Bones posted nearly two weeks ago has made me change my view. Because of this promo I can get behind this fight in a big way – as long as Gustaffson, Teixeira, Cormier, et al get their due shot and get it soon.
