Alexander Volkanovski believes Movsar Evloev has probably done enough to get the next shot at the UFC featherweight title.

At UFC London, Evloev beat Lerone Murphy by majority decision in a tense main event at The O2. It was not a clean, easy night either. Evloev had a point deducted and still found a way to win. If you missed the result details, we broke that fight down in our full UFC London coverage.

Speaking on the UFC on Paramount+ post-fight show, Volkanovski said the performance was better than many expected, especially because Evloev spent long stretches choosing to strike.

“It was an interesting one. I don’t think we all expected Movsar to just want to stand with Lerone. Whether that was something that he felt he had to do to just so he can guarantee himself a title shot, I’m not too sure. But you could see he was a lot stronger when he wanted to take it down, and then was able to out-do him on the feet. So for me, it’s quite impressive, to be honest. Fair play to him. He’s 20-0 now, and I guess he’s next.”

Evloev’s resume now leaves little room for debate

Evloev is now 20-0 as a pro and 10-0 in the UFC. His recent run includes wins over Diego Lopes, Arnold Allen, Aljamain Sterling, and now Lerone Murphy. That is a serious list, and UFC London added a five-round main event win under pressure.

Before fight night, there was debate about who should get the next title chance. But this result strengthens Evloev’s case in a big way, especially after many expected a harder time against Murphy’s striking and movement. We previewed those stakes before the event in our Evloev vs. Murphy title-implication breakdown.

After the win, Evloev joked in his post-fight interview that the UFC should book the title fight before Volkanovski gets too old. The champion answered with a smile and a direct response.

“This old man still has some tricks left, so bring it on.”

Volkanovski also said he is targeting a return in July or August, which could line up with a potential title fight if the UFC decides to make this matchup next.
