Alexander Volkanovski rules the roost at featherweight but don’t rule out a possible jump up in weight class.

Volkanovski has reigned as the UFC Featherweight Champion since late 2019. He’s scheduled to put his 145-pound gold on the line against “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung at UFC 273 on April 9.

While Volkanovski is focused on the task at hand, he’s isn’t shy in admitting the lightweight division intrigues him.

Alexander Volkanovski Shows Interest In Lightweight

During an interview with James Lynch for MMA News, Alexander Volkanovski said that he might be swayed into making the jump for lightweight.

“There is, there’s a lot of names in the lightweight division. That’s something that — obviously it is a competitive division but there’s a lot of big names there as well. So, I think it’s a stacked division.

“If you look at the lightweights from top to bottom, even guys outside the top 15, I think they’re just as hard as the guys in the top 15, if not harder. But, then you’ve got these guys that are really big names.

“So, that division holds some good name value there. So, there’s obviously a lot of fights that interest me. Anyone really up there at the top would definitely interest me. I feel like again, I’m gonna believe in my abilities. I’m not [cocky] but at the same time I’m confident in my abilities and I can see myself winning a lot of those fights, if not all them fights.”

Volkanovski vs. McGregor?

Volkanovski went on to say that he wouldn’t mind fighting Conor McGregor at welterweight if he has to.

“Yeah, 100 percent. I’d fight him at any weight.”

Back in Sept. 2021, Volkanovski had a memorable showdown with Brian Ortega. Volkanovski successfully retained his title but after the fight, McGregor sent out a couple of tweets taking aim at the champion. The “Notorious” one referred to Volkanovski as a “shart.”

Speaking to ESPN after the tweet, Volkanovski suspected that McGregor was drunk. He also said he’d have no problem sharing the Octagon with “Mystic Mac.”
