The UFC 319 prelims in Chicago saw Alexander Hernandez pull off one of the most dramatic finishes of the night. For most of the opening round, Chase Hooper used his reach and footwork to control the distance. He kept Hernandez on the outside, mixing jabs and kicks while circling away from danger.
Hernandez stayed patient, looking for the right opening. Just as the round was closing, he exploded forward with a perfectly timed counter right hand that caught Hooper clean. Hooper fell to the canvas, and Hernandez immediately swarmed with punches. The referee stepped in at 4:58 of the first round, stopping the fight only two seconds before the horn.
This win extends Hernandez’s streak to three in a row, the longest run of success he’s had in the UFC. Before Hooper, he scored decision victories over Kurt Holobaugh and Austin Hubbard. The 32-year-old has been with the UFC since 2018 and has faced names like Donald Cerrone, Drew Dober, and Renato Moicano. With a highlight finish like this, Hernandez may finally be gaining traction again in a stacked lightweight division.
For Chase Hooper, the loss breaks a five-fight win streak. Since moving to lightweight in 2023, the 25-year-old had looked sharp, picking up wins with his grappling-heavy style and improving striking. Against Hernandez, his range worked early, but one mistake in the closing seconds cost him dearly. It’s his first setback at 155 pounds, but given his age and skill set, Hooper still has time to rebound.
The main event featured UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis defending his belt against the undefeated Khamzat Chimaev. Du Plessis entered on an 11-fight win streak, while Chimaev carried a perfect 14-0 record. The fight stood as a clash of two dominant streaks in UFC history.
