Alex Pereira, the former UFC light heavyweight champion, is taking time to rest after a busy schedule. The Brazilian fighter shared plans for his next fight, targeting a return in October, while casting doubt on current champion Magomed Ankalaev’s status. His comments point to a developing rivalry.
Pereira explained his need for a break.
“People are used to seeing me fighting all the time. Now I’m resting my body a little,” Pereira said. “The next fight should be in October. September, October or November.” He suggested a flexible timeline for his comeback.
He also responded to Ankalaev’s comments with a pointed remark.
“He has to promote himself a little by saying my name, because nobody even knows that he is the champion and, when he says my name, it comes up a little,” Pereira said. “I’m not responding to his provocations because I know that it’s really to promote himself. At the right time, I will speak up.” His approach shows patience in addressing the tension.

Pereira’s Journey from Kickboxing to UFC Dominance
Alex Pereira, born in 1987 in Brazil, began as a kickboxer. He won the Glory middleweight and light heavyweight titles, showcasing his striking power. His MMA career started in 2015, and he joined UFC in 2021 with a strong debut.
He claimed the middleweight title in 2022 against Israel Adesanya and moved to light heavyweight in 2023, winning the belt against Jan Blachowicz. Pereira defended it three times, beating Jamahal Hill, Jiri Prochazka, and Khalil Rountree, before losing to Ankalaev at UFC 313 in March 2025. His record stands at 11-2, reflecting his rapid rise.
Pereira’s shift from kickboxing to MMA shows his versatility. His aggressive style has built a solid reputation, paving the way for his next move.
Magomed Ankalaev, a Russian fighter, claimed the light heavyweight title from Pereira at UFC 313. Since joining UFC in 2014, he has built a record of 20-1-1, known for his wrestling and striking mix. His win over Pereira marked his first championship.
Ankalaev’s recent remarks have added tension with Pereira. The Brazilian’s rest and planned October return could lead to a rematch, depending on UFC decisions. Both fighters offer unique strengths, setting up a potential future contest.
Alex Pereira will use his rest period to recover and train, aiming for a strong return in October. A rematch with Ankalaev seems likely if he stays healthy, offering a chance to reclaim the title. Magomed Ankalaev, as the current champion, may defend his belt against a top contender like Jiri Prochazka, strengthening his reign while awaiting Pereira’s challenge.
