Earlier this month, it was reported by UFC that an intriguing lightweight showdown between Al Iaquinta and Justin Garthje added to UFC Fight Night 135 which is set to take place on Aug. 25 in Lincoln, Nebraska, but unfortunately, Al pulls out of this fight as per a recent report by ESPN.
When the news of this fight broke, Iaquinta however, doesn’t seem to be on board by saying fake news. Moreover, “Ragin Al’” put Dana White on blast for the company’s intentions to move the weigh-in time from the early morning back to its original time at 4 pm.
Iaquinta didn’t disclose the reasoning for cancellation of the match.
‘Ragin Al’ is coming off a unanimous decision to current lightweight champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov, after taking the bout on a day’s notice at UFC 223 back in April. Before that, AL was on a five-fight winning streak.
According to ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, UFC offers the fight to lightweight contender Kevin Lee, but he also turns it down.
UFC offered the Justin Gaethje fight to Kevin Lee, sources say, however, I'm told Lee declined the opportunity because he wanted more time to train for his next fight. Lee is hoping to return to action later this year.
