Most people don’t realize that Poland is pretty damned good at grappling (yes, the entire country). Actually, there is very good at grappling throughout most of Europe, particularly the “no-gi” kind (it’s almost as popular as it is in the US). Year after year, FILA holds No Gi Championships with primarily all European grapplers taking the medals home. Poland and it’s surrounding neighbors have a long history of folk wrestling that has been supplemented with Judo/Jiu Jitsu that spread there in the late 19th century. While BJJ was spreading throughout the US in the 90’s, it’s rival Luta Livre was adopted throughout Europe. The point being this – grappling runs deep within those Polish roots and only continues to get stronger as BJJ grows in popularity.
