Damn you, Mortal Kombat X for making us preorder for Goro

MORTAAAL KOMBAAAT.

Those two words are the Rick Roll of nineties dance music. If you don’t have the Mortal Kombat theme in your head right now then I don’t even want to know you.
Many would argue that Mortal Kombat is the greatest fighting game series of all time and they’d be right – I’m not here to dispute it, my mind’s made up and I’m not about to change it. Ryu who? Ken who?

As a kid I spent countless hours playing Mortal Kombat which is of course down to awesome parenting. Thanks mum, thanks dad. I’m not about to lie to you, and say I’m incredible at Mortal Kombat II because that would make me full of shit. One thing is true though, I love Mortal Kombat.
I’ve tried my best to follow it through the years, I’ve even got fond memories of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. It’s a kick ass side scroller with Liu Kang and Kung Lao. Ed Boon had intended to do a sequel called Fire & Ice that centred on Sub-Zero and Scorpion but that was canned by a studio closure. He’s also toyed with doing an HD reboot of the original – but let’s face it, we’re not here to talk about the what ifs of the Mortal Kombat world.

Let’s talk about the here and now, or indeed the future. Next year we get Mortal Kombat X – which Boon has promised will be the best Mortal Kombat yet. It’s out in April on the next gen consoles (PS4 & Xbox One). It has more of everything you know and love, Fatalities, nasty bone breaks, gore, etc. One thing that’s going to be new next year is each character will have three move sets rather than your standard one. The reason for this is to give you a choice on how to play. An example of this is Raiden, his three new flavours are – Thunder God – High damage electrical mayhem, Displacer – Teleport to string together wild combos and Storm Lord – Electrical traps throughout the enviroment to really mess with your opponent. Sounds wild doesn’t it?

It was confirmed today that Goro would be a pre-order bonus. Initially I was absolutely outraged by this. Sick to death of developers withholding content from us. Goro has been a Mortal Kombat mainstay since Mortal Kombat II. Sure there have been a few games where he wasn’t playable since then, but what the hell? This big four armed goofy fuck is awesome. He’s Sloth from The Goonies, with two extra arms and a really shitty attitude. Who wouldn’t want to be Goro from the start? And then it clicked, I want to be Goro from the start. I’m pre-ordering this game. Check mate, Boon. You win this round.
