Thursday afternoon seemed like a typical fight week, featuring open workouts from fighters competing at UFC 235. Typical, until Colby Covington decided to crash the party, to shout into a megaphone at Kamaru Usman. Here is the good, the bad, and the ugly from this encounter.
The Good:
Like it or not, Colby should be the one facing Tyron Woodley this Saturday. Having won an interim title for like 15 minutes, he should be the rightful contender. However, as we all know, that isn’t the case. So in light of the situation he is in, it was smart to show up to the open workouts. Interacting with the crowd, keeping his face fresh in everyone’s mind; excellent decision. Also, empty or not, threatening to be released if he is does not get the next title shot makes for good headlines.
The Bad:
Colby, buddy, you need to have a better line than “The real champ is here!” or at a bare minimum, more than just that line. You came to make a statement, not just to repeat the same phrase 50 times. Not to mention, this was directed at Usman, not the champion, Woodley. In typical Colby Covington fashion, he took a good idea, and made it fall just a bit short.
The Ugly:
The sunglasses and MAGA hat are becoming Colby’s trademark, but it doesn’t make it look less ugly. On top of that, sporting the tiny megaphone, which many believe came from Mike Dolce, doubles down on the idea that he looks like he just stepped out of a Trump rally.
What do you think of Colby’s tactics? Does this sway the fans or the UFC at all?
