SyFy Network’s Defiance is My SciFi Guilty Pleasure

I grew up with science fiction, it somehow became really important to me as a kid and helped me to really think outside of the box and wonder what the universe was like. That means reading a lot of Star Wars alternate universe, Isaac Asimov and others as a kid, while still watching tons of scifi movies and TV shows. As an adult I’ve kind of cooled it on the scifi front a bit, but I still find myself watching almost every major science fiction television show that pops up and looks mildly interesting. Seeing as though I cover games on a regular basis, the show Defiance seemed like something that I’d have to check out because, you know, it is based on a game.

Defiance airs Mondays on SyFy Network and is about a future earth that has been visited by aliens and thoroughly trashed through a war that unleashed alien terraforming ships on the Earth, leaving the aliens stranded and humanity living in what is now essentially an alien planet. Don’t bother with the game unless the price drops, it’s kind of whatever, but the show is actually kind of alright, for a SyFy original. It is kind of cheesy at times, but I still watch it. I mean, it makes Falling Skies look a lot more realistic and contains just about every scifi trope in the book, yet, you know, it continues on.

I went into the series expecting it to be the worst thing ever and walked away watching it on a weekly basis and actually telling my girlfriend to not delete it from the DVR, that is about as glowing of a review as I can give it.
