Vergil Ortiz Jr. once again reminded fans why he is one of boxing’s most dangerous punchers. Fighting in front of his hometown crowd at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas, Ortiz needed less than two rounds to stop Erickson Lubin and keep hold of his WBC interim super welterweight title on Saturday night.

With the win, Ortiz improved his professional record to 24 wins with 22 knockouts, while Lubin fell to 27–3. From the opening bell, Ortiz walked forward behind a tight guard, throwing sharp jabs and right hooks that forced Lubin backward.

In the second round, Ortiz landed a clean right hand that rocked Lubin against the ropes. Smelling blood, he continued his assault with heavy combinations that slipped around and over Lubin’s guard. A right hook connected flush at the 1:27 mark, leaving Lubin unsteady and defenseless as Ortiz followed with left hooks to seal the finish. The referee quickly intervened to stop the bout and prevent further damage.

Lubin, who had previously lost to Jermell Charlo and Sebastian Fundora, was unable to find any rhythm before the stoppage. The performance marked another quick and clinical finish for Ortiz, who has now scored 22 knockouts in 24 victories.

After the fight, Ortiz immediately turned his focus toward a new challenge. Watching from ringside was Jaron “Boots” Ennis, the current WBA interim super welterweight champion, alongside promoter Eddie Hearn. Ortiz motioned for Ennis to join him in the ring, and the two shared an intense faceoff as fans erupted inside the arena.

“We’re ready for the best. We want to fight the best,” Ortiz said in the ring. “Boots, come over here.”

Ortiz later added that a matchup with Ennis is the one he believes boxing needs most right now.

“I think this is the fight that has to happen. I think this is it,” Ortiz said.

Ennis responded with equal confidence.

“It’s the best fight in boxing,” Ennis said. “I think he did a great job tonight, but I’m going to show the world why I’m the best. I’m going to show his team. They’ve been talking crazy, and I’m going to back it up. I’m going to make you pay. I guarantee you.”

The two fighters exchanged words in a heated but respectful confrontation, setting the stage for what could be one of the biggest fights in the super welterweight division. Promoters Oscar De La Hoya and Eddie Hearn both expressed interest in making the bout next, which could unify several interim titles and determine the division’s true rising star.

Ennis, who boasts an undefeated record of 35–0–1, recently moved up from welterweight after unifying titles earlier this year. In his debut at 154 pounds, he needed just two minutes to stop Uisma Lima, keeping his own knockout streak alive.

As for Ortiz, the Fort Worth native continues to build his reputation as one of the sport’s most consistent finishers. His explosive power, paired with his relentless pace, has left little doubt that a showdown with Ennis would be among the most anticipated matchups in boxing today.
