Fury made the comments during a new ALF Global interview, revisiting the night Ngannou entered boxing as a former UFC heavyweight champion and immediately made the heavyweight lineal king look very human. “No, I didn’t not train for him because I didn’t think he was a good fighter. I knew he was a good fighter, but to me it’s levels to boxing. So if I’m fighting a world champion, then in my mind, he’s a world champion, everything’s good. But when you do an exhibition fight, play, it wasn’t really a fight, do you understand what I’m saying? It wasn’t, in my mind, a fight. It’s just an exhibition, a game.
“To him, to Ngannou, it was, ‘Aaaah, big fight, I fight Tyson Fury!’ To me, it was play, a game, you know what I mean?”
Fury also said the difference in boxing experience shaped his mindset. He did not frame Ngannou as some random warm body, but he made it clear he treated the assignment differently than he would a career boxer with world-title hardware. In Fury’s telling, Ngannou came in like a man chasing the biggest night of his sporting life, while Fury walked in like it was a weird side quest with gloves.
Fury Still Cannot Escape That Ngannou Knockdown
The trouble with that explanation is obvious. Ngannou was making his pro boxing debut, and he still put Fury on the canvas in Round 3. It was not some flash moment nobody remembers. It became the whole argument. One knockdown turned a bout many expected to be a celebrity-style squash into a full-blown heavyweight debate, and Fury has been answering for it ever since.
