Oscar rips Floyd’s dramatic incident with the ref
Speaking on his Instagram account, “The Golden Boy” did not hold back in criticizing Mayweather’s exhibition match with Gotti III. According to De La Hoya, “Money” and the whole thing looked bad, especially when he fired the referee in the middle of fight simply because things weren’t going his way.
“Floyd Mayweather fought another exhibition against Gotti last Saturday, a real sh*t show that left the crowd booing in the arena at the end. In the middle of the second round, Floyd literally had the referee swapped out. He didn’t like that the referee told him to stop hitting behind the head. Floyd is used to having the refs do whatever he wants, and he wasn’t getting his way this time. It was so embarrassing,” De La Hoya said.
Oscar’s advice for Floyd
De La Hoya then gave his former rival some unsolicited advice. In a seemingly sarcastic way, the boxing icon told Mayweather to focus on his legacy even though he needs money.
De La Hoya even claimed that Mayweather is being sued by his jeweler and his assets are now being sold.
“Floyd, you’re 50 years old,” De La Hoya continued. “You’re a legend in this sport, and I’ve stood up for you in countless interviews, including Shannon Sharpe’s podcast last week. You have to stop embarrassing yourself with these exhibitions. I know life is hard and life is expensive, but come on man, put your legacy first. Nobody wants to remember you like this… I hate seeing this happen, bro. Floyd, I’m rooting for you! Let’s turn it around.”
De La Hoya lost to Mayweather back in 2007. That win catapulted “Money” to new heights and made him one of the most polarizing boxing champions of his time.
Mayweather has transitioned to being exhibition boxer since beating Conor McGregor in 2017. So far, the undefeated boxing legend has also gone unbeaten in his exhibition career.
