Nigerian Boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju Passes Away Following Mid-Fight Collapse

The boxing world is in shock after the sudden passing of former African boxing champion Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju. The 40-year-old Nigerian fighter collapsed during a bout on Friday night at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra, Ghana. Despite immediate medical attention, he could not be revived.

Tragic Moment in the Ring

Olanrewaju (13 wins, 8 losses, 1 draw, 12 KOs) was facing Jon Mbanugu (13 wins, 1 loss, 1 draw, 12 KOs) in an eight-round light heavyweight contest when the tragic moment occurred.

During the third round, Olanrewaju suddenly fell backward onto the third of the four ring ropes. The fall did not appear to be caused by a punch. A few seconds later, he turned while lying on the rope and appeared to lose consciousness, with his head facing the canvas. Referee Richard Amevi quickly stepped in, stopping the fight and signaling for medical assistance.

Efforts to Save Him

Olanrewaju was immediately taken to Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where doctors attempted to revive him. After 30 minutes of efforts, he sadly did not recover.

He was later transported back to the Bukom Boxing Arena, where he was officially pronounced dead.

Olanrewaju made his professional boxing debut in 2019 and quickly gained recognition for his strength and endurance.

“We are really devastated,” said Remi Aboderin, secretary of the board. “[This] is not something we envisaged. We will live up to our responsibility and make sure that we stand [by] the family.”

Fans, trainers, and fellow fighters have shared messages of condolences, remembering Olanrewaju as a determined competitor. His passing has sparked discussions on fighter safety and medical precautions in boxing.

As investigations continue, Olanrewaju is remembered for the heart he brought to the ring and the legacy he leaves behind.
