Moses Itauma vs. Filip Hrgovic now has a world title attached. The heavyweight bout scheduled for August 29, 2026, at London’s O2 Arena has been upgraded to a vacant IBF heavyweight title fight.
The change comes after Oleksandr Usyk vacated the belt and Frank Sanchez, the mandatory challenger, agreed to step aside. Sanchez is expected to get the winner, which puts a clean title path in front of both Itauma and Hrgovic.
That is a major shift from the previous angle around Itauma. In June, Itauma said the Agit Kabayel vacant WBC title route could wait until after Hrgovic. Now the Hrgovic fight itself can make him a heavyweight champion.

Itauma enters the fight at 14-0 with 12 knockouts. He is still only 21, which makes the title upgrade more than a belt change. A win would put him among the youngest heavyweight champions in boxing history.
Hrgovic brings the veteran danger. He is 20-1 with 15 knockouts, and his last outing was a stoppage win over Dave Allen. The Croatian has already questioned whether Itauma has been tested enough to prove he can handle a real heavyweight title fight.
“I never see him in trouble. I never see him get punched or dropped. He’s definitely got skills and speed but to be a great fighter you must have heart, will, chin, endurance and we didn’t see that yet. Maybe he’s got all of that, but maybe not. I think I will test that. I will test is he a real deal or not.”
The quote fits the new stakes. Hrgovic is no longer just trying to slow down a prospect. He is trying to win the belt Usyk left behind and force Sanchez into a title fight on his terms.
Usyk’s Vacated Belts Keep Moving
The IBF opening is part of the wider heavyweight reset after Usyk vacated multiple titles before his final fight plans. The earlier Usyk heavyweight title vacancy created fresh lanes for contenders who had been waiting behind the undisputed champion.
Itauma has been one of the division’s fastest-moving names, but this is a different level of assignment. Hrgovic is bigger, more experienced, and has spent years around mandatory positions. The fight also keeps the winner connected to Sanchez, so the August 29 result should immediately shape the next IBF defense.
For Itauma, the upside is obvious. Beat Hrgovic and he skips from rising contender to world champion before most heavyweights reach their prime. For Hrgovic, the opportunity is just as direct: hand Itauma his first loss and finally claim the title chance that has hovered around his career.
