Mike Tyson is once again stepping into the spotlight, preparing for his much-anticipated fight against Floyd Mayweather next spring. As he trains for the upcoming bout, the former heavyweight champion reflects on what he learned from his recent loss to Jake Paul and how it reshaped his approach to the sport he dominated for decades.

“I couldn’t believe it until he signed,” Tyson said about Mayweather confirming their fight. “He signed it, so I believe it.”

The 59-year-old boxing legend plans to share deeper reflections on his career and recent experiences in his upcoming one-man show Return of the Mike, which debuts in November. Tyson said he will discuss “things that happened during my first fight with Jake” and his perspective on that moment in his life.

“It’s going to be really interesting,” Tyson said. “Since the last time I did this, I’ve fought a few times already. I’m ready to bring more this time.”

Learning from Jake Paul and Staying Focused

Tyson admitted that his biggest takeaway from the fight with Jake Paul was about mindset rather than skill.

“I wasn’t as focused as I should have been,” he explained. “This moment’s going to be over. Just enjoy it — it doesn’t last forever.”

As he looks ahead to his clash with Mayweather, Tyson says his preparation is focused on gratitude and perspective.

“I’m just preparing and looking forward,” he said. “It’s a wonderful thing that could happen.”

Tyson called the match “something neither the world nor I ever thought would or could happen,” adding that boxing has entered “a new era of the unpredictable.”

The fight, promoted by SCI Sports/Fight Sports, is set to take place next spring. Tyson last fought Jake Paul in November, losing by unanimous decision after eight rounds. He later admitted that he “blanked out a little” during the fight and didn’t remember much of it.

“I remember coming back from the first round and Jake was doing something strange,” Tyson recalled. “That’s the last thing I remember. The next day I woke up and asked my wife, ‘Why did I do that?’ I just didn’t know what was going on.”

From Brooklyn Streets to Boxing Royalty

Born Michael Gerard Tyson in Brooklyn, New York, Tyson’s journey to boxing greatness began in hardship. After a difficult childhood marked by poverty and run-ins with the law, he was introduced to boxing by trainer Cus D’Amato, who became a mentor and father figure. Under D’Amato’s guidance, Tyson developed into a formidable force.

At age 20, Tyson became the youngest heavyweight champion in history when he defeated Trevor Berbick in 1986. Known as “Iron Mike,” his unmatched power and aggressive style made him one of the most feared boxers of his generation. Over the years, he earned a reputation as both a knockout artist and one of the most controversial figures in sports history.

Following a turbulent career — which included a prison sentence, the infamous ear-biting incident against Evander Holyfield, and several comebacks — Tyson retired in 2005. He has since reinvented himself as an actor, author, and entrepreneur, finding peace outside the ring while remaining one of boxing’s most recognizable icons.

Despite the growing popularity of mixed martial arts, Tyson has never been tempted to step into an MMA cage. He once explained that his success in boxing made the move unnecessary.

“The biggest UFC fighters combined couldn’t match what I made in boxing,” Tyson said. “So I never thought about doing it.”

As Tyson continues preparing for his next chapter against Mayweather, he remains focused on perspective and growth.

“I’m just enjoying the ride,” he said. “Whatever happens, happens — but I’ll do better in the next one.”
