Lee Reeves is being treated in hospital after his knockout loss to Gary Cully at Dublin’s 3Arena, where the Limerick boxer was taken from the ring on a stretcher following the final punch of their bout.
Cully stopped Reeves in the 10th round on Saturday night to claim the BUI Celtic super-lightweight title. Reeves had been ahead for stretches of the fight before the late finish changed the tone of the Dublin card from a domestic boxing result into a worrying post-fight scene.
The fight took place on the undercard for Pierce O’Leary’s IBO world super lightweight title bout against Mark Chamberlain. It landed during a busy stretch for boxing coverage, but the immediate focus here is Reeves’ condition after a scary finish.

Frank Warren And Gary Cully Send Support To Lee Reeves
Promoter Frank Warren said Queensberry was in contact with Reeves’ team while the boxer remained hospitalized overnight.
“All our thoughts and prayers are with Lee Reeves and his family at this time as he remains in hospital. Everyone at Queensberry is thinking of him and we’re in constant contact with his team regarding his condition as we hope for positive news.”
Cully also directed his post-fight concern toward Reeves after the knockout and credited him for the way he fought as the underdog.
“My prayers and thoughts are with Lee Reeves, hopefully he’s okay. He came in there as a big underdog after fighting relatively at a lower level up until now. But he really showed that he can operate at a higher level. Huge credit to him.”
Cully said the late finish came only after he had to stay disciplined through a difficult fight.
“I had to show I had balls; I always knew I had balls. There was never a question in my heart or my head. I really had to think in there, and that shot that came in the tenth round was a greatly timed shot. I had to stay switched on and stay concentrated.”
Reeves, 31, is from Roxboro in Limerick and has long been tied to his local community outside the ring. Limerick Treaty Suicide Prevention, where Reeves is listed as an ambassador and active member, posted its own message after the fight.
“Everyone at Limerick Treaty Suicide Prevention is thinking of our ambassador and colleague, Lee Reeves, during this time. We’re all behind you, Lee.”
The concern around Reeves adds a sobering note to what had been a major domestic boxing opportunity for both fighters. Cully leaves with the BUI Celtic belt, but the result is secondary until there is a clearer medical update on Reeves.
