More than two years removed from their instant classic in Madison Square Garden, Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano returned to the ring to run it back one one of the most anticipated rematches in boxing history.
On that night, Taylor edged Serrano via a closely contested and very debatable split decision to retain her undisputed lightweight crown. This time around, Taylor will put her undisputed super lightweight world title inside the 80,000-seat AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Round 1-
Serrano gets things started by pumping her jab and Taylor throws a couple of right hooks. Serrano moves in and Taylor lands a nice counter right before circling out of the corner. Serrano continues to push forward, putting Taylor in the corner as we approach the final seconds of the opening round. Serrano blasts Taylor with a nice overhand left that has Taylor stumping back against the ropes. Taylor circles away and avoids taking any more damage before the bell sounds.
Round 2
After finishing the first round on a strong note Serrano came out looking to start the second in the same fashion. However, Taylor has other plans as she lands a big shot to the chin as Serrano marches forward. That got Serrano’s attention but did little to prevent her from trying to put Taylor on the back foot.
Round 3
Serrano continues to move forward, but Taylor is doing a better job of keeping her at bay with a stiff jab. Serrano pushes through it and throws a two-punch combination, but Serrano fires right back with a barrage of strikes that have Serrano backing away. Taylor is looking better with each round, but it’s likely not enough to swing the scorecards in her favor.
Round 4
Taylor gets things started with a nice combination near the corner, but it’s Serrano who pushes the pace. Taylor is more than willing to get into a firefight with Taylor, but she’s beginning to clinch up each time Serrano closes the distance. A brief pause to the bout comes when an accidental headbutt occurs from Taylor leaning head-first into Serrano. Once the fight resumes, Serrano continues her pursuit and lands a nice right hand near the corner.
Round 5
Serrano closes the distance right out of the gate and Taylor attempts to make her pay, but a clinch forces the referee to separate them. Serrano lands a counter left and follows it up with a lead left that lands. Serrano is walking down Taylor and throws a left hook, but Taylor ducks under. Taylor clinches up at every opportunity, giving herself the chance to reset. With 10 seconds left in the round, Serrano rips to the body, and the two fighters trade blows until the bell sounds.
Round 6
Serrano is sporting a nasty cut over her right eye from the headbutt in the fourth round. Taylor lands a left which appears to have busted the gash open even further. The referee pauses the action to have the ringside physician take a look but allows the fight to continue. Serrano continues to stalk her opponent, but Taylor manages to avoid eating any dangerous strikes.
Round 7
We see some big exchanges in the seventh round as Serrano gets blinded by her blood. With Taylor weary and Serrano wounded, both women continue to duke it out in the center of the ring. Taylor lands a solid left, but Serrano comes right back with a nasty right hook followed by another one. It appears that Serrano’s cut is taking away from her accuracy, but she still appears to be outlanding Taylor which will certainly help her on the scorecards.
Round 8
With the fight winding both, both fighters come out landing huge shots. It’s become a battle of Taylor’s volume versus Serrano’s power. Another clash of heads opens the cut on Serrano again and Taylor scores a solid left. Then we get yet another head clash followed by a left hook by Taylor. Serrano and Taylor trade blows in close and Taylor is deducted a point for the repeated clash of heads.
Round 9
The cut over Serrano’s eyes is beyond nasty, but she’s still slinging leather with Taylor in a series of insane exchanges. Serrano is landing with accuracy, but Taylor isn’t backing down and both women are happy to bloody and batter one another throughout the penultimate round.
Round 10
Taylor gets nailed with a right and a left from Serrano and the challenger is getting the best of the striking exchanges. Taylor blazes back with a strong two-fisted assault, but she’s hurt and is taking an absolute beating in the final round. A body shot pushes Taylor back, but Taylor responds with a massive shot, and both women end the fight throwing caution to the win and looking to make a statement on the scorecards.
