Jake Paul has never been one to hold back and his latest comments on MMA are stirring up controversy. Despite being signed with the PFL and expected to make his MMA debut in 2025 Paul isn’t convinced that the sport is heading in the right direction.

Paul stepped into the boxing ring in November and secured a unanimous decision victory over former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson. The win added to his record, bringing it to 11-1. However, some criticized the fight due to Tyson’s age, while Paul viewed it as another big achievement in his career.

Jake Paul Thinks MMA Has Lost Its Edge

During a recent appearance on RING CHAMPS with Ak & Barak Paul explained why he believes MMA is no longer as exciting as it used to be. “MMA is not what it was, that’s the truth of the matter,” he said. According to him fighters are so well-rounded now that there are fewer submission attempts and not as much ground fighting.

“Boxing is bigger than ever. The biggest sporting event of the year in 2024 was boxing. Whereas MMA is becoming a s***tier version of boxing,” Paul claimed.

He pointed to UFC champ Alex Pereira as an example of the shift saying “Guess who the biggest star of the sport is in MMA? Alex Pereira, who is a kickboxer. Because he’s knocking everyone out, blah, blah, blah. And he’s the best one because no one can take him down, no one can submit him, so he’s just knocking everyone out.”

MMA Fighters Are Too Skilled at Defense

Paul believes that modern MMA fighters are focusing too much on takedown defense rather than grappling. “Essentially, it’s kickboxing because everyone is getting good takedown defense, and everyone is a black belt in jiu-jitsu.” He thinks this makes the sport predictable and repetitive.

“So, there’s no more submissions, really. There’s not a lot of takedowns, and even if there is it’s f***ing boring. Everyone is good at takedown defense, so it’s literally kickboxing,” Paul added. He even pointed to statistics to back his claim saying “The UFC has less significant strikes per round, and that’s with five-minute rounds.”

Paul’s comments didn’t sit well with many MMA fans who were quick to challenge his take on social media. With his own MMA debut on the horizon fans are eager to see if he can prove his point inside the cage.

What an awful take all around lmao. Not to mention the stain this dude put on boxing in his sparring match with 60 year old Tyson.

Sounds like a jealous guy.

There was literally 3 submissions out of 12 fights at 311 this guys a retard

So MMA is shittier than boxing because there’s no takedowns.. but boxing is not shitty because there’s no takedowns? Math ain’t mathing here.

Without takedowns in mma you have just striking, which is often less technical and lower level than boxing striking.
