Jake Paul will not be returning to the ring anytime soon.

Following his knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua, athletic officials have placed Paul under an indefinite medical suspension due to the extent of injuries sustained during the bout. The ruling means Paul cannot compete again until doctors formally confirm that he has fully recovered.

Injury forces regulatory action

The Florida Athletic Commission confirmed that Paul’s suspension stems from a fractured jaw suffered during the contest, which took place in Miami in December. Medical reports later revealed that the damage required surgical intervention, including the placement of multiple plates to stabilize the jaw.

Because the suspension has no set end date, Paul’s return depends entirely on medical clearance rather than a fixed waiting period.

Early in the matchup, Paul relied on movement and distance, limiting exchanges with Joshua. As the rounds progressed, fatigue became increasingly visible. By the fifth round, Joshua had seized control, scoring knockdowns as Paul attempted to avoid prolonged exchanges.

The decisive moment arrived in round six when Joshua cornered Paul and delivered a series of clean punches, capped by a powerful right hand that sent him to the canvas. Although Paul appeared responsive after the fall, the referee stopped the fight to prevent further injury.

After the bout, Paul disclosed that his jaw had been broken in two locations. Surgeons later repaired the damage using metal plates, a process that requires extended healing time before contact sports can resume safely.

Under commission rules, Paul must now wait until a physician certifies that his jaw has fully healed before he can be licensed to fight again.

Paul was not the only fighter affected by post fight medical rulings from the card. Several athletes received temporary suspensions, including Tyron Woodley, who was sidelined for 30 days following a knockout loss to Anderson Silva.

  • Camilla Panatta: 30-day suspension
  • Yokasta Valle: 30-day suspension
  • Justin Cardona: 60-day suspension
  • Diarra Davis Jr.: Indefinite suspension

Woodley’s defeat marked another setback in his boxing career, which began after transitioning from mixed martial arts.

There is currently no timeline for Paul’s return. His recovery will be closely monitored, and clearance will depend on medical evaluations rather than promotional plans.

For now, Paul’s focus remains on healing, with any future bouts contingent on doctors approving a safe return to competition.
