Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. is in serious trouble. The former middleweight champ was arrested by ICE in Los Angeles on July 2, 2025, days after losing to Jake Paul in a cruiserweight bout on June 28. Chavez faces deportation to Mexico for alleged Sinaloa Cartel ties and an expired visa. On July 3, Paul posted an American flag emoji on social media, prompting debate about whether it supports ICE or marks Independence Day.

ICE’s Arrest and Paul’s Response

ICE moved fast. “On July 2, ICE arrested Mexican boxer and criminal illegal alien Julio Cesar Chavez Jr,” the Department of Homeland Security stated. “He is now being processed for expedited removal from the United States. This Sinaloa Cartel affiliate has an active arrest warrant in Mexico for his involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunitions, and explosives.” They added, “Under President Trump, NO ONE is above the law, including world-famous athletes.”

Chavez entered the U.S. on a tourist visa in August 2023, which expired in February 2024. DHS claims he lied on a green card application tied to his marriage. His attorney, Michael Goldstein, called the allegations “outrageous,” arguing ICE is targeting Chavez’s fame to scare Latino communities.

Paul’s emoji led to mixed reactions, with some seeing it as a jab at Chavez and others as a holiday nod.

 Fans React

The amount of people triggered by you posting an American flag is astonishing.

Rich people just completely fucked over the 99% of the rest of us

There’s no reason to celebrate July 4th tomorrow, our country has been compromised by oligarchs.

Shut the fuck up

The amount of people who got mad by you posting American flag on 4th of July is a phenomenon which should be studied 🤣

it’s july 3. he posted it because his recent opponent, Julio César Chávez JR, was arrested by ICE

Chavez, 39, is the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez Sr. He won the WBC middleweight title in 2011, defending it three times, with a 54-7-1 record and 34 knockouts. Legal troubles, including a 2012 DUI and a 2024 arrest for an assault weapon, hurt his career. He beat Uriah Hall in July 2024 but lost to Paul by unanimous decision, with scores of 99-91, 97-93, and 98-92.

Chavez is in ICE custody, facing deportation and Mexican charges for alleged weapons trafficking. His boxing career looks finished. Paul, now 12-1 with a No. 14 WBA cruiserweight ranking, is eyeing fights with Anthony Joshua or Gilberto Ramirez. His emoji keeps him in the headlines as Chavez’s legal fight continues.
