Gervonta Davis returned to the squared circle on Saturday night set to defend his WBA lightweight world championship against current super featherweight titleholder Lamont Roach.
‘Tank’ walked into the bout with a perfect 30-0 record, including 28 wins by way of knockout. Along the way, he’s earned big finishes against Ryan Garcia, Leo Santa Cruz, and Jose Pedraza. Standing in his way of another highlight-reel finish is Roach, a former Golden Gloves champion who is sitting on a six-fight win streak. Overall, Roach is 25-1-1 with 10 KOs to his credit.
Round 1
The opening round starts relatively slow with both fighters pumping their jab and getting a read on one another. Roach continues throwing his jab to both the head and body, but ‘Tank’ has offered little in return as we hit the two-minute mark of the round. Davis jabs with the right and follows it up with a left to the body. Roach jabs and throws a right hook behind it, but Davis blocks it as the round ends.
Round 2
The inactivity continues in the second round as Roach continues to throw his jab with nothing coming back his way. The referee encourages both fighters to pick up the pace as we get a minute into the round. Davis jabs to the body. Roach jabs to the body and he gets one back from Davis right on the chin. Davis double jabs and then goes to the body.
Roach is controlling the center of the ring and has Davis backed up against the ropes. Davis throws a left-right combination and they tie up. Roach closes the round with another jab that fails to get through Davis’ guard.
Round 3
Things start to pick up a bit with the fighters getting into a quick exchange at the start of the third. Roach continues to attack the body. ‘Tank’ gives him a body shot right back. Roach jabs but puts nothing behind it. Roach throws a couple of quick lefts and Davis makes him pay with a stiff shot to the body. Davis connects with a left that has Roach moving back momentarily. Roach responds with a left hook and a jab.
Davis ducks in for a body blow and Roach partially connects with an uppercut. Davis ends the round with a left jab and right hook that miss the mark.
Round 4
Davis moves in quickly and nearly gets blasted with a right hook from Roach. ‘Tank’ absorbs a double-jab from Roach. Davis throws a lead left and then works the body with a couple of stiff shots. They trade jabs and Davis fires off a one-two. Davis circles the ring as Roach continues to put on the pressure. As the distance closes, ‘Tank’ clinches up and eats a hard left hook from Roach on the break. Davis protested the shot after the bell.
Round 5
Roach is back on his front foot and pumping the jab as Davis looks for an opening. ‘Tank’ throws a left hook, but nothing more than that through the halfway point of the round. Davis finally connects with a shot to the body. Roach responds with a combination. Davis continues working the body and connects with a lead left hand that splits the guard of Roach.
Davis lands a series of left hands and things are getting chippy with both fighters trash-talking. Roach clinches up and that prompts Davis to throw a shoulder thrust, earning him a warning from the referee. As the fight continues, Roach and Davis are more interested in talking than landing anything.
Round 6
The fists start to fly in the sixth round both fighters offering heavy shots in the opening minute. Roach misses with a right hand. Roach moves in quickly and appears to get caught with a counter-left. Davis lands another stiff counter left. Davis continues to offer up the left hand, going up top and then targeting the body. Davis throws a one-two to the body and Roach is struggling to find his target.
Roach jabs against the ropes and goes to the body. The fighters separate and Davis throws a heavy left. ‘Tank’ offers a little showmanship to the mostly quiet crowd in the final 10 seconds.
Round 7
Roach opens the round with some work to the body. Davis fires back, connecting with a lightning-fast left. Leading with the left, Davis unloads a three-punch combination. Davis is coming strong and lands a left followed by a booming right hand. Roach refuses to back down and lands a double left hook. Roach throws a one-two and connects with a right hand in the clinch.
Davis connects with a combination and follows it up with a nasty right hook to the body. Roach responds with a left to the body and appears to catch Davis with a hammer fist as the round comes to a close.
Round 8
Little activity in the opening round with Roach pumping the jab and talking to Davis. ‘Tank’ throws an uppercut, but Roach sidesteps the shot. Roach throws a body shot and eats a counter jab. Davis uncorks a left but eats a nasty counter right that backs Davis up. Roach lands an uppercut as Davis connects with a shot on his opponent’s beltline. Roach throws a couple of rights and Davis gives him a left in return.
Roach has outlanded Davis in the last two rounds.
Round 9
Roach is once again the busier fighter in the round, throwing a flurry of strikes in close. Out of nowhere, Davis turns away and takes a knee which should be counted as a knockdown. Instead, the referee just offers him a warning and the fight resumes with Davis coming out looking to land heavy. ‘Tank’ is unleashing a series of heavy lefts and rights, but Roach fires back with a vicious right hand of his own. Davis rips to the body as we approach the final minute of the round.
Davis misses with the left and Roach lands a check right. Roach lands with another lead right hand and the round ends with both fighters looking at one another.
Round 10
Roach continues to jab away as Davis lowers his hands, tempting Roach to move in. Davis throws one-two and Roach comes back with a left hook and an uppercut. Backed into a corner, Davis clinches up and waits for the separation. Roach continues to land the right hand as Davis attempts to fire back with a combination. Davis fires back with a three-punch combo.
Roach has doubled the output of Davis and is pouring on the pressure as we hit the 10-second warning. Roach and Davis trade jabs before the bell sounds.
Round 11
Davis is starting to pick it up once again and lands with a left hand. Roach comes right back with a flurry of strikes that sends ‘Tank’ retreating. Davis lands a right hand and Roach clinches up. On the break, Roach lands a right hook followed by a left uppercut. Roach lands another right-left and Davis looks a little worse of wear. Throwing strikes in close, Davis lands a low blow which prompts a warning from the referee.
Davis throws a stiff jab and Roach gives him his receipt. Roach throws a combination. Davis tries to fire back but it’s Roach who’s connecting with the better shots in the waning seconds of the penultimate round.
Round 12
Davis plays to the crowd as the round begins. Davis throws a jab and Roach comes right back with a three-punch combo. Davis jabs again and is talking to Roach. A jab from Roach connects and Davis misses with a left. Roach throws a left and Davis counters. Roach fires right back with a body shot as we hit the 90-second mark. Davis is sitting back and waiting for Roach to throw.
Davis throws a left to the body followed by one upstairs. Roach connects with a right hand. Once the 10-second warning hits, neither fighter is interested in throwing. Instead, they ride out the remainder of the round and we’ll go to the scorecards.
