After their first fight ended in an all-out brawl, legendary pugilist Floyd Mayweather will return to the squared circle to run it back with former mixed martial artist John Gotti III.
14 months ago, Gotti III—grandson of infamous American mafioso John Gotti—was disqualified in the sixth round of his exhibition bout with ‘Money’ in Florida. Moments later, both corners poured into the ring and chaos ensued. Since then, Mayweather and Gotti III have squashed the beef and will attempt to settle things in Mexico City.
Round 1
The opening round was relatively uneventful with Floyd getting things started with a shot to the body of Gotti followed by a right. Gotti returns fire to the body and eats a counter. Mayweather lands a one-two as the round comes to an end. The timekeeper apparently forgot that the rounds were two minutes rather than the more traditional three-minute rounds prompting Gotti to yell at him.
Round 2
Gotti does not look comfortable and refuses to bite on the bait that Mayweather is putting out for him. The referee issues a warning to Mayweather for hitting the back of the head. Unconcerned, Mayweather essentially tells the referee to shove off. The fight comes to a sudden half halfway through the round as Mayweather seemingly fires the referee on the spot. The referee exits the ring and another ref steps in to take over duties. As the fight resumes, Mayweather pops a jab. ‘Money’ is starting to let his hands go, perhaps a little angry by the circus that just went down moments earlier. Gotti ends the round with right hand.
Round 3
Mayweather lands on Gotti and Gotti turtles up against the ropes. Mayweather starts throwing combinations and Gotti has no interest in trying to fire back. Gotti looks toward the referee suggesting that one of the shots wasn’t a legal blow, but the referee does nothing and allows the action to continue uninterrupted. Eventually, Gotti gets off the ropes and Mayweather backs away. Gotti lunges in and whiffs on a show just before the end of the round.
Round 4
Gotti opens things with a jab. Mayweather fires a shot to the gut of Gotti. That prompts Gotti to throw a body shot of his own moments later. That’s pretty much all we get in the fourth as Mayweather is content to dance round, landing another five or six shots with very little on them.
Round 5
As we go into the second half of the fight, Gotti begins marching forward but fails to find any kind of success. Anytime Mayweather throws a strike, Gotti ducks down and then complains to the referee that the shots are hitting the back of his head. Gotti lands a left in his only successful moment of the round, but Mayweather quickly hands him his receipt courtesy of a left hand followed by a right.
Round 6
As we close in on the final rounds, Mayweather picks up the aggressiveness. ‘Money’ walks forward with his hands down and both fighters start ripping to the body of one another. Mayweather doubles up on the jab. Gotti returns fire with a jab of his own and that takes us into the penultimate round.
Round 7
Mayweather continues to be aggressive as Gotti goes to the body with a shot that looked like it might have been low, but the referee didn’t appear to think so. Mayweather lands a liver shot followed by a blow up top. Mayweather repeats the process prompting Gotti to throw a combination. Gotti once again ducks down and Mayweather gives him a downward chop.
Round 8
Gotti looks like he’s ready to go home, but with one round to go, he marches forward and backs Mayweather up. Gotti throws a shot that appears to hit Mayweather on the back of the head, prompting the referee to step in and issue a warning. Luckily, Mayweather agreed with the call, ensuring we didn’t see yet another referee fired on the job.
Gotti starts swinging a bit, perhaps realizing he has nothing to lose, but nothing of significance lands, and the bout comes to an end, offering a bit of mercy to everyone watching.
Official Result: Floyd Mayweather and John Gotti III fight to a draw (no decision).
