Ryan Garcia, a renowned boxer, was scheduled to compete in Japan on December 31, 2024, but failed to participate. Consequently, Fanmio, a promotional company, filed a lawsuit against him and his management team, Golden Boy, on March 13, 2025, claiming they breached an agreement and caused significant financial losses. Fanmio intended to broadcast the event to a global audience via pay per view television, but the fight never took place.

A Big Fight Plan

Fanmio made a deal with Ryan to fight a guy named Rukiya Anpo in Japan.

They said, “Specifically, Garcia agreed to participate in an exhibition fight in Japan, a fight which Fanmio agreed to promote and broadcast to millions of viewers through its worldwide pay per view streaming network.” They worked hard to tell everyone about it and spent over a million dollars. But then Golden Boy, Ryan’s bosses, got in the way. The lawsuit says, “Thereafter, Golden Boy, threatened by Fanmio’s involvement, improperly used its influence over and contract with Garcia to prevent the match from happening.”

Money Trouble

Fanmio says Golden Boy asked for way too much money to let Ryan fight.

The lawsuit explains, “But not only was the boxing match not prohibited by the Golden Boy contract, but also the king’s ransom demanded by Golden Boy to allow the fight to go forward ultimately led to the boxer relying on a pre existing injury and backing out of the fight, when Fanmio refused to agree to Golden Boy’s terms. This, however, was not until Fanmio had already incurred over $1 million in expenses working to promote the Dec. 31, 2024 fight.” Ryan said his wrist hurt and quit, but Fanmio thinks he pretended.

Fanmio is extra sad because Ryan could have done the Japan fight and another one later in New York.

They said, “Garcia could have fought in both the exhibition and the Times Square fight. Both Fanmio and Golden Boy and Garcia could have made substantial profits. However, Fanmio is left holding the bag, quite literally, for the sums that it had already expanded in order to promote the exhibitions, as well as the millions in lost profits it sustained as a result of Garcia and Golden Boy’s misconduct. Those costs had already been incurred prior to Garcia feigning injury in Dec. 2024.”

Now Fanmio has nothing, but Ryan’s getting 40 million dollars for his New York fight on May 2, 2025.

Who Is Ryan Garcia?

Ryan Garcia, a 26 year old professional boxer from California, is recognized for his exceptional punching ability. He secured a significant victory against Devin Haney in 2024, but faced disciplinary action for using a prohibited substance, resulting in a suspension from competing in the United States until April 2025. Although Japan permitted him to participate in a planned bout there, the event did not proceed. Currently, he is preparing for a match against Rolly Romero in New York, with support from his management team, Golden Boy.

Fanmio says, “Upon information and belief, Garcia is being paid $40 million for the Times Square fight and his next fight through Golden Boy. Golden Boy is expected to see profits well in excess of that given Garcia’s popularity. On the other hand, in addition to losing out on the $1 million that Fanmio had already incurred promoting the exhibition, Fanmio will not take home any profits on a fight which will not take place, profits that could have totaled in excess of $10 million.”

What’s Happening Now

Fanmio dragged Ryan and Golden Boy to court in California because they’re upset about losing money and missing a cool fight. They believe Ryan and Golden Boy played a sneaky trick on them. Ryan’s still training hard for his next big boxing match, but this court trouble could mess things up for him. People might wonder if Ryan will say sorry or if Fanmio will get their money back.
