Edgar Berlanga is being punished for pulling a ‘Mike Tyson’ inside the ring.

The undefeated boxer would try to bite his opponent Alexis Angulo during their fight. Berlanga was seen trying to bite Angulo’s ear when the two were in the clinch. The disgusting move was seen in round 7 of the boxing bout.

The action is reminiscent of Tyson’s bite on Holyfield during their 1997 rematch, in which he took a chunk out of Evander’s ear leading to a disqualification.

During the incident, Berlanga appeared to move his head up Angulo’s neck to target his left ear, while the Colombian attempted to step back and prevent the incident.

Berlanga’s Punishment

Of course, the actions of Berlanga wouldn’t come without consequences. The ear-biting fighter got a slap on the wrist.

The super-middleweight boxer is being fined a total $10,000. On top of that, he will also be banned from competition for six months from the New York State Athletic Commission. That’s according to a report from ESPN

Apology

In the midst of all of the controversy, Berlanga would take some time to apologize for his actions.

“I want to apologize for my actions and what I said yesterday about the Mike Tyson bite,” Berlanga wrote. “I was in the moment and got a little ahead of myself. It doesn’t take away from the embarrassment that I have caused upon myself, my team, top ranks, and many others.”

As Berlanga gives credit to his opponent after achieving victory, the Puerto Rican fighter says he admits that the bout was a tough one.
