Returning to the ring for the first time since coming up short against Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney stepped into the co-main event spotlight in Times Square for a clash with former 140-pound titleholder Jose Ramirez.
Haney saw his momentum halted last year after getting knocked down multiple times by Garcia. However, Haney’s loss to ‘King Ryan’ was eventually overturned after it was revealed that Garcia tested positive for banned substances. With a win on Friday night, Haney could find himself on a collision course with Garcia once again. But first, he’d have to get through the always dangerous ‘Jaguar.’
Round 1
The fighters tie up quickly, prompting a break from the referee. Through the first 90 seconds, neither fighter has thrown a punch. Haney finally gets things going, landing a jab. Ramirez attempts to respond with a wild right hand that misses the mark. Haney is showing off his footwork, moving left and right, but he’s not throwing. Ramirez throws a right that hits nothing but air, and the opening round mercifully ends with little to no action.
Round 2
The commentators have identified that there is loose velcro on Haney’s right shoe, but his corner failed to fix it in between rounds. Haney opes up the second with a check right hook and Ramirez ties up. Haney does not look comfortable in the ring at all as he continues to dance around without throwing any offense.
Haney finally throws a couple of jabs. Ramirez responds with a right, and they tie up once again. Haney throws a heavy left. Haney lands his first power shots of the right, but he appears to be more concerned with getting hit than hitting his opponent. The action picked up a bit in the second stanza, but Haney is not looking like himself through the first six minutes.
Round 3
It appears they have finally fixed Haney’s right shoe by taping down the velcro. Ramirez throws a right to start the round. Haney fires back with a lead left hook. Ramirez fires off a combination against the ropes, and Haney ties up. Ramirez throws another combination, but Haney avoids the shots this time around and connects with a jab followed by a left.
Hanehy’s striking is starting to open up a bit, and he lands a hard right hand—his best punch of the fight so far. Ramirez rips to the body with an uppercut in close. Haney circles away and dances around until the bell sounds.
Round 4
Ramirez throws a right and a left, but both miss as Haney dodges the blows with his footwork. Thus far, Haney has only landed nine power strikes. Ramirez continues to walk down Haney, but Haney throws a nice hook before circling away from the ropes. Haney still isn’t throwing any jabs, and Ramirez connects with a counter near the ropes that forces Haney to clinch up.
Haney still hasn’t settled in and offers up a double jab, landing up top before ripping to the body just before the bell.
Round 5
It’s over a minute before either fighter lands a shot as Devin Haney continues to dance around the ring, and little else. Haney finally unleashes a right hand over the top, followed by a left. They clinch up momentarily. Ramirez gets back on his front foot, backing Haney to the ropes. They clinch up again and are separated in the center of the ring. With 30 seconds to go, the offense is few and far between. They trade jabs. Ramirez throws a combination, but nothing lands, and the round ends with a fizzle.
Round 6
Haney’s lack of offense now has the commentary team making passive-aggressive remarks toward the former undisputed lightweight champion. Ramirez is throwing, but one punch at a time. Still, it’s more than Haney. Finally, Haney throws a jab that appears to have cut underneath Ramirez’s left eye. Haney jabs, and Ramirez throws a couple of jabs of his own near the ropes. Haney jabs again.
Haney throws a hook, and Ramirez picks up the aggression in the closing seconds, throwing a flurry of strikes before the bell.
Round 7
Another slow round with Haney dancing all over the ring, and Ramirez attempts to walk him down without cutting him off. Despite the lackluster showing, Haney still appears to be up on the scorecards as he finally throws a short left. Haney doubles up on the jab. Ramirez responds with a one two in the corner and we’re already at the 10-second clacker with practically no punches thrown or landed from either fighter. Ramirez throws a combination late, but nothing substantial lands.
Round 8
Haney jabs to get the eighth round started. Ramirez stalks forward and throws a one-two before clinching up. Ramirez jabs. Ramirez throws a hook to the body, followed by one up top. Haney responds with his own one-two, punctuated by a hard right hand. Haney throws a pair of jabs and puts a heavy right behind it.
Ramirez and Haney trade blows in the closing seconds—the first time we’ve gotten any semblance of a boxing match through eight rounds.
Round 9
Ramirez lands an early combination with Haney backed against the ropes, showering the ringside commentators with their sweat. They joke that Ramirez’s best bet may be to get a baseball bat because his fists aren’t getting the job done. Haney lands a lead left hook. Ramirez goes on the hunt, chasing down Haney all over the ring and throwing a right hand against the ropes. Haney jabs and follows it up with a one-two.
Haney connects with a hook, and Ramirez appears to have no answer. Ramirez throws a left to the body and a right upstairs, but he’s out of range. Haney closes the round with a combination with his back against the ropes.
Round 10
Ramirez chases and ties up with Haney against the ropes. Haney looks content to just ride out the remainder of the fight with his footwork. Haney throws a jab to the body before getting back on his bicycle. Ramirez attempts to respond with a flurry in the corner, but Haney circles away and avoids taking any damage. Ramirez swings big with a right as the 10-second warning sounds. They end the round standing and staring at one another.
Round 11
More of the same in the penultimate round with Jose Ramirez chasing and Devin Haney dancing. Haney throws a combination in close and catches Ramirez with a right hand near the two-minute mark of the round. Haney with a one-two, and Ramirez is just out of range when trying to respond.
With the fight coming down to the wire, there is zero drama or urgency, particularly on the part of Ramirez, who is clearly down on the scorecards.
Round 12
According to the commentary team, Haney vs. Ramirez is close to setting the record for the lease number of strikes thrown by both fighters in a 12-round bout. Unfortunately, neither fighter did anything above and beyond what they did for the previous 11 rounds. Ramirez chased. Haney danced. They trade single shots with 15 seconds left in the scrap. The 10-second warning goes off, and neither fighter throws another shot through the end of the fight.
Mercifully, we go to the scorecards.
Official Result: Devin Haney def. Jose Ramirez via unanimous decision (119-109, 119-109, 118-110)
