Katie Taylor & Amanda Serrano make history at MSG
There was a time not too long ago when female participation in combat sports seemed delusional. Sticking to the traditions of his time, boxing promoter Bob Arum still does not believe in the worth of two females fighting for entertainment. However, there are a couple of influential men who disagree with Arum’s stance.
Well-known boxing promoter Eddie Hearn believed in the value of women competing in combat sports. And now along with YouTube sensation Jake Paul, they put together one of the most significant events in women’s fighting history.
Katie Taylor and Amanda Serrano will make history tonight as the first two female boxers to headline the Madison Square Garden. Taylor is a trailblazer in the field and is largely credited for persuading the Olympics to include women’s boxing.
During the pre-fight press conference, Hearn noted her contributions to the rise of women’s boxing. At a time when competitive boxing was banned for females in Ireland, Taylor took part in tournaments disguised as a boy with a masculine name to get through the regulations.
