Conor Benn and Ryan Garcia both made the welterweight limit Friday in Las Vegas, removing the weight question from their WBC title fight. Benn registered 146 pounds before Garcia arrived later at 145.5. The result also settled the contingency behind Garcia’s request for eight-ounce gloves if Benn came in above the contracted mark.
The 12-round title fight takes place Saturday, September 12, at T-Mobile Arena. Garcia enters at 25-2 with one no contest and 20 knockouts, while Benn is 25-1 with 14 knockouts.
The complete official weigh-in video recorded both main-event fighters on the scale:
Benn, who had discussed the difficulty of returning to 147 pounds during fight week, stepped on the scale first. The official announcement confirmed he was one pound below the championship limit.
146 pounds for the challenger Conor Benn. 146 official.
Garcia followed later in the session and came in another half-pound lighter than Benn.
Garcia, 145 and a half. The main event is set. Both fighters on weight, ready to go for the welterweight world title showdown.
The clean weigh-in followed a busy final press conference that included Teofimo Lopez appearing in disguise during the Garcia-Benn promotion. Neither headliner needed additional time on the scale, and the championship bout remained intact.
Every Fighter On The Card Made Contracted Weight
Jai Opetaia weighed 199 pounds for the cruiserweight co-main event, with Noel Mikaelian at 200. Mark Magsayo came in at 134.5 for his lightweight bout against Andres Cortes, who weighed 135. Heavyweights Raphael Akpejiori and Da’Mazion Vanhouter registered 246 and 231.5 pounds.
The preliminary card also cleared the scale. Jose Ramirez and Alexis Rocha each weighed 146.5; Abel Gonzalez was 167.5 and Raul Solomon 167; Pablo Rubio was 131 and Oswaldo Molina 131.5; Vlad Panin weighed 151.5 to Dakota Linger’s 150.5; and Sean Garcia came in at 134 against Abraham Morales at the same weight.
Garcia-Benn Championship Fight Cleared For Saturday
Garcia-Benn headlines the card after a week dominated by questions about the challenger’s cut and Zuffa Boxing’s next moves. Dana White also used the same media cycle to discuss the conditions that could bring Terence Crawford back for another fight. Friday’s official numbers leave Garcia and Benn cleared to decide the WBC title in the ring.
