Canelo Alvarez isn’t ruling out a potential super fight against Kamaru Usman.
Canelo is the undisputed super-middleweight champion. He will be challenging Dmitry Bivol for the WBA Light-Heavyweight Championship. The title fight will be taking place on May 7 inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. If Canelo wins, he’ll be due for a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin if “GGG” can defeat Ryota Murata on April 9.
As for Usman, reports have surfaced claiming the UFC is targeting a title fight against Leon Edwards for July. Usman underwent hand surgery back in February.
Canelo Alvarez vs. Kamaru Usman?
Canelo Alvarez appeared on The MMA Hour and was asked by Ariel Helwani if he has any interest in a fight with Kamaru Usman. “The Nigerian Nightmare” has been calling for a boxing match with the Mexican superstar.
Canelo doesn’t sound opposed to the idea.
“Payday, payday [laughs]. That’s the payday, I know but maybe. Why not? You never say no, right?”
Canelo revealed who first brought the idea of a matchup with Usman to his attention.
“My trainer told me about it and I said, ‘Well, if you say.'”
For Canelo, a bout with Usman isn’t constantly running through his mind. With that said, he’s open to it if the timing is right.
“No, it’s not really on my mind. I want a really good legacy for my career and then we can talk about other things, right?”
Crossover fights are nothing new. We’ve seen the likes of Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor among other “freakshow” fights involving a boxer and an MMA fighter.
