Boxing superstar Canelo Alvarez has been battling with promoter Oscar De La Hoya, and streaming service DAZN. Now he has been reportedly released from both contracts, allowing him to be a free agent.

2020 has been the least active career in the career of Canelo Alvarez. He has a tendency to fight multiple times a year, so much so that he included a clause in his contract with Golden Boy Promotions, for a minimum number of annual bouts. So naturally when he was unable to get these fights in 2020, he was frustrated, opting to file suit against both the promotion and provider DAZN. While he argued that other fighters were able to compete, the counterargument was that they wanted Canelo to fight marquee names like Jorge Masvidal.

Canelo Alvarez Is A Free Agent

It seems that this battle may not be going to court after all. According to a press release from Eddie Reynoso, coach and manager for Canelo Alvarez, the boxing champ has been released from his contracts for both Golden Boy Promotions and DAZN. This has resulted in being a free agent, able to test the market for another promotion.

“In my role as a manager and coach of Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, I allow myself to communicate to the boxing community and to all our fans, that starting today, November 6th, ‘Canelo’ becomes a free agent, so we are ready to continue with his boxing career.

All this time we have been working very hard in the gym with a lot of responsibility and discipline, to be in great physical shape and ready to fight this year and it will be!

We will announce date, rival and place very soon, and we will return stronger than ever to keep growing and showing that Mexican boxing is the best.

Thank you!

Eddy Reynoso”

This is a massive announcement for the boxing community, given how big of a star Canelo Alvarez is. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. Moreover it is worth noting how big of a loss this is for DAZN, and could potentially spell trouble for them moving forward.
