Anthony Joshua’s name has returned to headlines for reasons far removed from the boxing ring. A serious car accident on December 29 has placed the former heavyweight champion at the center of emotional and career related speculation.
The crash occurred when the vehicle Joshua was traveling in collided with a parked truck along a highway. Two of his close friends, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, were passengers and lost their lives at the scene. Officials later confirmed the driver is facing reckless driving charges.
Joshua Breaks Silence Only Briefly
In the days that followed, Joshua avoided interviews and public appearances. His only response came through a short social media post shared from the funerals held in London. The message read, “My Brothers Keeper.”
No additional statements regarding his health, emotional state, or professional plans have been released.
Uncle Claims Boxing Career Is Over
The first direct claim about Joshua’s future came from his uncle, Adedamola Joshua, during an interview with Nigerian outlet Punch. According to him, the boxer has already communicated a major decision to his family.
“The major thing there is that he has retired from boxing,” Adedamola said. “That is one thing that makes us glad because each time he’s fighting in the ring, we are always carried away emotionally. Each time he’s knocked down, it is just like the heart is coming out of our chest. All these emotional feelings whenever he’s fighting, it’s too much trauma for us, also.”
He added that the family accepted the decision with relief.
“Now that he has said that he’s leaving while the ovation is highest, we are happy,” Adedamola said.
No Official Confirmation From Joshua
While the comments have circulated widely, it is important to note that they remain second hand. Joshua himself has not confirmed retirement, and no announcement has been made by his management team.
The statements also come less than two weeks after the crash, a period often considered too early for irreversible career decisions following trauma.

Joshua’s silence comes at a critical moment. He is scheduled for a major fight against Jake Paul, a bout that has significantly raised his profile in North America. Beyond that, discussions have been ongoing for a potential clash with Tyson Fury, possibly backed by Saudi Arabia in 2026.
Those plans now appear uncertain.
Industry Voices Urge Patience
Tyson Fury’s manager, Frank Warren, recently addressed the situation, emphasizing the emotional toll of the tragedy.
“Well, boxing will certainly be the last thing on his [Joshua’s] mind, right now,” Warren told The Mirror. “He’s obviously lost two team members who were good, close friends who are now no longer with us, so that will be a big loss to him. I don’t know the extent of his injuries, but it’s also how mentally this will affect him.”
He also noted that people respond to loss differently.
“Boxing again will be the last thing on his mind, but tragedy can affect people in different ways,” he added. “Sometimes, you need something you can really focus on to pull through to the other side.”
