Heavyweight Champ Andy Ruiz Jr. Sets His Sights On Wilder

Andy Ruiz Jr. shocked the world with his upset knockout win over Anthony Joshua. Although ready for a rematch, he is looking ahead to bigger bouts.

Ruiz was a massive underdog when he took on WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. Ruiz managed to knock out Joshua in the 7th round, in what some are calling one of the biggest upsets in combat sports history.

Part of the reason the bout was so shocking, was that Ruiz took the bout on short notice. Despite this, Joshua did not have a rematch clause in his contract. Promoter Eddie Hearn announced that the rematch would take place anyway, later this year in the U.K.

Although Ruiz seems on board for a Joshua rematch, he is looking ahead to future bouts. He spoke to TMZ about what he wants after he fights Joshua, and it is WBC champ Deontay Wilder. (via Asian Persuasion MMA)

“That’s what we’re aiming for. But first things first, I gotta get [past] Joshua [again].”

Ruiz recognizes the magnitude of the upset. He was asked if he thinks this upset is bigger than Tyson vs Douglas, back in the day.

“I think it was because of the way I look and it was a big shock.”

So before a fight with Deontay Wilder can happen, Andy Ruiz must fight Joshua again. If he fails to get past Joshua, the chance of a Deontay Wilder fight goes away.
