Bellator President Scott Coker Thinks Rory MacDonald Is Insane

Scott Coker: “Rory MacDonald Wants To Fight All The Time, I Must Slow Him Down!”

Rory MacDonald has always been one of the toughest fighters in the octagon. He got the nickname “The Red King” after the match versus Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 due to the enormous level of damage his face received. Scott Coker was amazed by Rory’s outstanding warrior mentality and brought him to Bellator MMA.

MacDonald defeated Douglas Lima at Bellator 192 on January 20, 2018. The Red King became Bellator Welterweight champion. MacDonald’s left leg was hurt badly due to Lima’s dangerous low kicks. He couldn’t even walk. But two weeks later, The Red King had a shocking request for Scott Coker. (via MMAMania.com)

“Two weeks later, he calls me and he’s like, ‘I’m ready to schedule a fight,’” Coker said. “I said, ‘Rory, no, no. You need to put on the brakes here for a second. Let’s just rest.’ He said, ‘No, no, I’m ready. I’m just about ready to walk. I still have a limp, but I think I can start training in another week.’ I’m like, ‘This guy is nuts.’”

“He just wants to fight, he wants to stay busy,” Coker said of MacDonald. “He wants to get out there and compete. So, I think it’s my job to slow him down. He’s chomping at the bit. And he wanted this fight with Gegard and Gegard wanted to fight him. And they wanted to test themselves.”

Yet, Rory MacDonald is rewarded with a super fight versus Gegard Mousasi. Their clash is slated for Bellator 206 in SAP Center, California, on September 29th. The Red King is going to test his luck at Bellator Welterweight Grand Prix after Mousasi match, no matter the result. Rory’s opponent is the former UFC Welterweight runner-up Jon Fitch. Other competitors in the bracket are Neiman Gracie, Michael “The Venom” Page, Paul Daley, Ed Ruth, Andrei Koreshkov, and Douglas Lima.

Scott Coker claims he hasn’t introduced any fighter similar to Rory MacDonald yet.

“I have never met a fighter like Rory,” Coker said.

What are your thoughts on this? Does Bellator MMA need more fighters like Rory MacDonald? Should Scott Coker let him fight more often?
