It was just a couple of weeks ago when Jason “Mayhem” Miller announced he’ll be returning to MMA in a Periscope video that looked like a bad mushroom trip. This was followed by a press release from Venator FC defending their signing and booking of Mayhem to fight Luke Barnatt (once again, not Josh Barnett). Keeping up with his Mayhem Miller Industries media obligations, we now have his appearance on Inside MMA.
Mayhem stays distant, loony and constantly blurring the lines between what’s real and what’s not. I’m reminded of the time Joaquin Phoenix appeared on David Letterman during the filming of his mockumentary “I’m Still Here”. In a lot of ways, it’s very similar. Almost as if he is playing a caricature of himself (or what he knows we expect him to be). Mayhem makes everyone around question if they are the butt of the joke or if they’re apart of it. This take is also echoed in a quote from the press release:
“He is just doing with great skills his PR job […] but with subtle irony, playing the character of ‘mental devastated’ that every stupid in this world lightly gives to him without knowing him.” – Frank Merenda, President and Co-Founder of Venator FC
