Rory MacDonald has adopted the nickname 'Ares', I was really hoping he'd go with the whole Dexter serial killer image and nickname-it just seems so fitting. 'Ares' actually seems to be quite suitable as well though because much like the mythical stories of the Greek god of war-Rory MacDonald is proving time after time in his young UFC career that he will wage a war against any opponent put in front of him.

Tonight he technically picked apart BJ Penn for a three round war that at many times left BJ wobbling on his feet. Rory hit BJ with powerful punches and kicks and had him for a few moments during round two unable to do anything but cover up and take a flurry of destructive body and head shots from MacDonald. The doctors even came in to check on Penn's status before allowing the third round to go on. MacDonald's punches had left a few gashes on Penn's face and a large purple hematoma developed under his eye during the second round. Despite MacDonald physically dominating Penn through the entire fight he was unable to destroy the will of BJ Penn who just kept on coming and taking blows.

MacDonald won via unanimous decision and immediately grabbed the mic from Joe Rogan and issued a challenge to none other than the guy his mentor and training partner GSP just defeated at UFC 154-Carlos Condit. Oh boy, Carlos Condit seems to be the only person on the planet that makes Canadians want to go to war.

I think it was the combination of seeing BJ Penn look like he just showed up for a paycheck and Rory doing the shuffle and playing it safe when we could all see that he was holding back and playing with his food.

To me, it looked disrespectful. Where as when Diaz did similar things, taunting, he didn't look like he was holding back... and oddly that makes it alright.

I dont think he was holding back. I think he respected BJ's potential on the ground and didn't want to rush in. Only later in the fight did he find his comfort zone with grappling.

Watching Rory taunt BJ made me disappointed. He should have more respect in general. plus you should only be allowed to do the Ali shuffle if you've held the belt. I want to see Hendricks humble him down a few notches.

Was Rory's performance truly all that impressive when put in its proper context? He was using his height and length to pick apart a 155er with the fraction of his reach. Huge BJ fan, but Penn showed him one look (aside from the TD attempts) the entire fight. When Rory fought Che Mills (an adequately sized WW with striking) he was timid with his stand up and forced to take it to the ground after getting tagged.

The UFC is doing a great job building this MacDonald (MMA needs more of that), but he's still not proven in my book. I think a ton of WW can beat him. GSP, Condit (again), Diaz, Maia, Hendricks, Ellenberger, Kampmann... Perhaps even Fitch, take your pick.

I doubt it. Not saying he isn't good with the obvious potential to be great, but he's clearly being built up. Look at his record. When they threw him an actual test in Condit he lost. Yeah he outclassed Condit for much of the fight, but against an upper echelon WW he lost.

BJ is a legend in my book, but he was outmatched from the start. While all the top tier WW are in the shark tank Rory is being built up. When he starts winning against the guys I listed then let's talk. I'm an old scholl combat sports fan and I know a build up when I see it. I actually like it, but he's not proven yet.

I''m a fan but BJ looked decent for 1/2 of round 1, then after that it was all downhill. He should stay retired. Rory beat him pretty badly. (like we didn't know that was gonna happen). This whole "I'm not gonna fight GSP because he's my friend" blah blah blah... is ridiculous. Didn't Rory say something like "BJ was one of my idols growing up , but now he was just another opponent standing in my way..." Standing in your way of what!!!??? You won't fight GSP. Which GSP is thankful for because if Rory fought him, he'd WIN. It's like Dana White said months ago "If this kid saw Georges bank account he'd wanna kick his ass" At 23 yrs old I believe Rory is a GREAT fighter, but I also believe his is extremely NAIVE.
