Thiago Alves is fighting John Howard at UFC 124 and we're all going to like it

Thiago Alves is fighting John Howard at UFC 124 and we're all going to like it

A couple of days ago on MMAJunkie radio, Mike Pierce called out Thiago Alves and had some pretty decent smack talk regarding Alves on Facebook. On Twitter, Pierce said 'This place is as dead as Thiago Alves' and 'Thiago Alves to be featured on Biggest Loser on Dec 23rd'. He even asked Dana to gi...

KJ Noons thinks Nick Diaz is a trash-talking, pot-smoking chump

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Nick Diaz and KJ Noons rivalry, the beef started back in Elite XC where a controversial doctor stoppage handed Diaz his only loss in the past 3 years. Winning a fight due to a doctor stoppage in the first round is a lot like winning a competitive ea...

In all fairness, the entire MiddleEasy crew was supposed to go to the UFC Fan Expo in a taco truck and serve up carne asada goodness for fans of the site. Sadly the idea didn’t work out after we learned that tacos are not an approved cuisine at the John B. Hynes Center. Not sure what Boston ha...

Karo Parisyan is BACK in the UFC!

I could be looking too far into it, but when Dana says that you '[Expletive] the UFC' by pulling out of the fight the day before weigh-ins, it looks like that may denote a lifetime ban. In fact, it did constitute a lifetime ban in the promotion, but in ZUFFA years, a lifetime is only ten months....

Overeem accepts Fedor's challenge, plans to fight him after K-1

The greatest thing about Alistair Overeem accepting Fedor's challenge to fight him after he's done with the K-1 Grand Prix is that he actually watched a Bloodstain Lane video on a message board and responded. Next step for Alistair Overeem is to accept my friend request on Xbox Live. The guy plays...

Dan Henderson and Gegard Mousasi may get the next Strikeforce title shots, despite coming off losses

A lot of people criticized Strikeforce’s decision to give Brett Rogers a title shot immediately following his loss to Fedor Emelianenko last year. This past spring, Ubereem agreed with those critics as he made short work of Rogers and ended his first title defense in just shy of four minutes. ...

Carlos Newton should be undefeated based on how cool he looks. The same goes with Sokoudjou or any other guy that competes in MMA with a full set of dredlocks. Boondock Saints showing Fedor some love PDF Print E-mail
Written by Zeus

Boondocks Saints 2 dropped on October 30th and it will peel back your eyes and shoot scenes of ultra-violence directly into your soul (which is is the only way to do it). Sean Patrick Flanery (the guy that was trapped to the chair on the first one) is a complete fanboy of MMA. Dude opens up on Fedor, Randleman, Mark Hunt and even Ubereem. Once again more evidence that 'Pride never die'.

“That’s gonna be, well … I think Fedor is gonna crush the cat. But I will say this: I don’t wanna sound like one of those guys who critiques him and then beats his ass. Obviously Fedor will dominate on the ground, but I’ve seen some holes in Fedor’s game. I will tell ya this: Andrei Arlovski was lighting him the fuck up. He did drop Andrei, but Andrei was technically out striking the fuck out of him. Kevin Randleman suplexed Fedor like a fucking ragdoll. He fought Mark Hunt and had Fedor in side control for the whole first round of their PRIDE fight and Fedor couldn’t even get out! So in my opinion, Fedor pulled out some wins as opposed to dominating the guys from the first moment to kicking their ass.

Even with Mark Coleman - Mark Coleman took his ass [down] at will and, [in] typical fucking Hammer House [fashion], they refuse to learn any submission defense. He got arm locked relatively quickly, but there are guys out there who are just in a different league wrestling wise [compared] to Fedor. There’s guys out there who are in different leagues in submissions [compared] to Fedor. And there’s guys out there who are in a different league striking [compared] to Fedor. In my opinion, and now I know I’m probably going against the grain, he’s pulled out wins in some real bad situations, as opposed to guys that are just fucking crushing the opposition. You know what I mean?

Like GSP. GSP just fucks guys up from phase one. There’s not really a time when you’re like, ‘GSP got his guard passed and couldn’t get out for ten minutes.’ No. That never really happens. But Fedor, we’ve seen him get really dominated on the feet. We’ve seen him get really dominated on the ground. And if Mark Hunt got you in side control and you can’t get out, then man, that’s worrying. Having said that, Fedor is gonna crush that guy (Brett Rogers).

But the fight I wanna see is Alistair Overeem and Fedor. Obviously, I’d love to see Fedor fight some of the UFC guys, but I’m not convinced that Fedor is unbeatable by any stretch of the imagination. I think he is very beatable. This is just a tough motherfucker. You come from that part of the world like you’re taking cold showers, those guys are just bad ass. I thought he was gonna die when Randleman just spiked him like a ragdoll, but the fucker is unphased. He takes the wind out of guy’s sails, but it’s like ‘Holy shit - that guy is completely unphased.’ He just keeps coming and that in my opinion is his best weapon; the ability to take your nest, and just look at you and go, ‘Nope. If you don’t kill me motherfucker, I’m gonna keep coming at you.’ And he ends up finding a way to win. I’m a Fedor fan.”

What the fuck did I just read?
It's funny he mentions GSP, because GSP is a parallel of Fedor at the Welterweight division. Both guys are so well rounded, there's no multi-role fighter that exists out there that can dominate them at all 3 aspects of MMA.

Like he said, there are individuals who are solely dedicated stand-up fighters, wrestlers, BJJ/Submission fighters who outclass Fedor in one of these 3 departments.
The problem is, there exists no magical combination of all 3 skills above that surpasses the sum total of Fedor's game.

Sure Arlovski can outstrike him. Big Nog is better at BJJ/Subs. Brock Lesnar is a better wrestler.

But everyone of those fighters is so one-dimensional, all Fedor has to do is exploit their glaring Achilles Heel. And while Fedor might not do it in eye-popping/fight of the year fashion, he gets the job done in the end.

That's thing about guys like Fedor, GSP, BJ Penn. They're not great at anything. They're good at everything.

Whereas other fighters in their division are so narrowly focused, *Cough* Brett Rogers *Cough*, they just have a giant neon sign on their forehead reading: "SUBMIT ME".

Look, Brett is only decent at striking. He bum rushed Andre and caught him. I wouldn't think it could happen twice. But no-ones immune to the punchers chance. Fedor has very well rounded skills and a giant 4 leaf clover coming out of his ass. He also has a serious chin and a huge heart.

I make these points for a good reason. He isn't unbeatable but even if he is beaten this time or next, he should be respected as one of the best.

Having said that, I do want to comment on other things. I agree with what Sean said about Fedor. Fedor is a bettre than average striker, an expert submission specilist, and an elite grappler. His wrestling is suspect. as far as skills go, I wouldn't put him above fighters like GSP, BJ Penn and most importantly Anderson Silva. One of which you failed to mention for some reason.

Anderson Silva is widely regarded as THE TOP striker in all of MMA. He is also an Elite level submission specialist on par or better than all but the absolute purists. His wrestling like Fedor is suspect. His ability to force people into his specialty is what truly sets him apart from Fedor in my opinion. Fedor doesn't own any particular area in MMA and masterfully moves from one to the other to find where he has an advantage. While Anderson destroys fools who dare strike with him and submit wrestlers who think they can simply ground and pound him.

GSP too has more to offer than Fedor. I would put GSP as a close second to Anderson in the pound for pound category. His striking is at an expert level along with his submissions. But he, like Anderson owns an area as the best or close to the best. His wrestling knows no equal. And he too forces people into his game.

So I don't think Sean was off by any means on his thoughts of Fedor. Plus people who cry about Fedor and say he is the pound for pound king need to realize that there are two clearly more deserving people ahead of him. And to boot they are fighting the best of the best to prove themselves, and Fedor continues to allow his manager to milk him with less than the best fights possible.

This dude is yet another seemingly responding directly to the unmade ideal that Fedor is perfect and unbeatable.

Stood w/ a prime Crocop but has a hole in his standup from the 3 min against Andrei of which noone would call a 10-8 rd.
Pinned for a short while with Hunt but reversed Nog.
Did he see the Coleman rematch where the takedowns were 1 for 10?

These examples wouldn't be called holes to anyone else in the Sport except Fedor.
Unbeatable? No, of course not as noone is.
Is Fedor held to a standard soo much higher than anyone else? Yes!

Show this guy some real come from behind performances and see if he places these examples along with them. Mention GSP's and co' worst days and see if they belong as well.

I agree that Fedor doesn't have any glaring weakness outside of his wrestling. I will concede that I didn't see the Coleman rematch. So if Fedor somehow fixed that, then that's cool. However I still stand behind the fact that he he doesn't dominate in any key area period. So while I agree that he is the best Heavyweight out there, I don't put him above GSP or Anderson.

One quick note though, reversing Nog isn't as impressive as just the surviving his submissions. Wresting is a different than BJJ.

GSP got caught, like Fedor will someday, and Anderson lost early in his career. Getting disqualified for kicking and knocking out a down opponent doesn't qualify as anything negative or postive.

I got one question for Sean patrick flanery. is rocco in the sequel?

side note mark hunt weighs like 300 pounds hes not an easy guy to get off you. And i completely dissagree that Andrei was lighting fedor up i think the best shot prior to the KO was a body shot by fedor.

I think it was much clearer than the Machida vs Shogun fight, that up until the knockout punch Fedor gave Arlovski, he was loosing the stand up war easily. To dispute that sounds more like the usual Fedor fan nonsense than actual analysis of any sort. I am a Fedor fan but I am also a realist too.

I'm sorry, I really think people are setting themselves up for disappointment by counting Lesnar out all the time. I get that he did pro wrestling, boo, hiss, but he's changing fast. He hung out in Frank's half guard forever and was never really in any danger of being submitted, and his takedowns are on par with Coleman's if not better--not to mention the size difference.
Unless Fedor knocked him out on the feet pretty quickly, I think he'd have a long night with Lesnar.
I hate Lesnar, and I love Fedor, but facts is facts.

Yeah he smothered Mir with his 280 pound man boobs. I am so shocked Mir was not able to sweep him. /sarcasm

Mark Coleman actually shot in and swept people's feet. Brock Lesnar just falls on top of people. Big difference. Get glasses.

"facts is facts." O RLY?

BTW, its "facts are facts". We use "are" when its plural. So if you are going to mock him; use proper English, or at least get it close.

I wouldn't count Lesnar out for sure, but he isn't in this discussion because this is still the pound for pound discussion. Brock is a bad ass, and I think in time he will be nearly unstoppable. But I think his glaring weakness should be his stand up and his still very inexperienced BJJ. I do know he beat Heath Herring, but he caught Health off guard with his explosiveness and reach. Plus he didn't continue to stand with Heath for a good reason. He knew his limits.

I would still chill on saying that he's anywhere in the top 10 pound for pound until his skill set gets more potent. He is most likely the number two in heavyweights but not across all weight classes. He is still getting by on his size and explosiveness. I do believe he is a smart fighter and learns fast, but give him time.
