being a bjj fan im usually for the gracies, but i didnt realise this until i saw transcripts from an interview with renzo ( http://thefightworkspodcast.com/2009/11/29/renzo-gracie/ -scroll down abit) but rorions branch (him, rener and ryron) of the tree is so suspect. fair enough they all learnt and got their black belts from helio, but the fact that, now rorions sons are 5th (ryron) and 4th (rener) degrees flummoxes me. i've NEVER heard about either of them winning or competing in bjj comps like the top guys do.

i've always read that stripes are given on the basis of how much time and effort has been dedicated towards jiu jitsu, awarded with time-in-grade being as significant a factor as skill level. according to the ibjjf it goes black belt then 3 yrs to get 1st stripe, another following 3 yrs for 2nd, 3 more yrs for a 3rd, then 5 yrs for a 4th and another 5yrs for the 5th. thats 19 yrs to get from BB to 5th BB..ryron's 30, and bjj bb's arent given till someone is 18 minimum, he would have had to have been 11 to get his bb, but he was 18 when he got it from helio. given that the latter stripes were given by rorion it doesnt surprise me, like renzon said rorion's more intreseed in selling bjj then teaching it.

i'll put it into to perspective ryron cousin; renzo like ryron (to my knowledge currently) is also 5th grau. however renzo is 15 years older, has been learning and teaching bjj for a lot longer, fought in mma and participated in jiu jitsu comps. yet his cousin junior by 15 years is of equal level? another example (among the many) saulo and xande ribeiro, have won countless bjj tourneys medals between the 2 of them. saulo much older then ryron is a 4th deg bb, xande 31 yr a older then ryron is a 3rd deg bb. yet ryron is supposedly a 5th deg and more skilled then multiple time world champions brothers that compete against the elite in bjj? i dont think so..
