THQ Tank and the guys over at Yukes have been working overtime to give us inside looks at the upcoming UFC 3 game, to the point where I don't think they are getting any sleep. In the latest developer video uploaded yesterday, a full match from beginning to end (including neat entrances) featuring Cowboy Cerrone vs Ben Henderson goes down, and the emphasis is purely on the ground game mechanics. What's new, what's been removed and what is staying? All questions shall be answered.

I have to admit the cage work and animations look much improved over the previous years. In general it looks like a lot of frames of animation have been added to the old engine. Controller shining is gone but the sped up clock is still there (bummer), but being only about 3 months from going gold the game looks right on track (and includes a sick Bendo standing guillotine).

The Submission system looks even worse than last year. Covering the screen with the submission octagon is stupid and I don't like the new default camera angle, the fighter models don't look great either.

Since the first game they have never bothered to fix the damn canned animations. The way they move looks absolutely ridiculous. From the beginning of the fight, the way they move around the ring looks stupid. The punches look robotic, too. The fighter has a starting position, then the punch animation, and then returns back to the starting position. It's not natural where a punch would cause your whole body and momentum to shift that way.

I wonder what it feels like to be assigned to a project like this, knowing the whole time that the competitors built a superior game in every way except for licenses... If this is the result of sleepless nights for these guys, then I'd hate to see what would happen if they worked according to the regular schedule. I won't be trading my copy of EA MMA anytime soon.

It looks like on top of staying with the stiff animations and movements, THQ did a terrible job mimicking EA's submission system
