We all knew it had to be done and in this scenario, we're going to be the first to start. Personally, I don't believe Anderson Silva let his UFC 117 title defense pan out five rounds only to win by a seemingly miraculous but meticulously planned triangle. However, a large portion of you have been rocking your tin-foil hats ever since the end of UFC 117 so I'll take a voyage in your world of potentially outlandish jiu-jitsu conspiracies, title preservation theories and general MMA nuttiness and hopefully return back to reality just in time for dinner.

If Anderson Silva planned to hesitate until the very last moment of the fight to pull of a victory, perhaps this clip of Ando securing a kimura on Chael Sonnen late in the second round only to voluntarily release it may be the shred of evidence needed to polish off that conspiracy theory you've been constructing over the weekend. Here we see Anderson Silva securing an almost Sakuraba-like kimura. The wrist control is there, leverage seems to be adequate, Silva even appears to have Chael Sonnen wedged against the cage in such a manner that if Chael tried to spin out of the submission, he would undoubtedly be impeded by the wall. In a moment of sheer 'WTFness', Anderson Silva lets go of the kimura and casually transitions to somewhat of a heel hook. Is this the smoking gun needed to establish Anderson Silva as the Andy Kaufman of MMA? Probably not. Most of you don't even know who Andy Kaufman is. 80s n00bs. Regardless, securing a kimura only to voluntarily let it go just adds to the never ending intrigue of the only guy you've ever known from Curitiba, Brazil.

There are plenty of ways to defend the kimura, but what you're talking about is if Chael was somehow in full guard- which he was not. That's the only way grabbing the knee would have defended anything.

Chael's LEG was in full guard, lol, but he wasn't. Anderson had all the torque he wanted if he would have pressed him a little bit. Besides, when is Sonnen's hand even grasped on to his knee? I see his finger tips reaching for a tendon(which probably would have put him in even more pain)- but there was absolutely no way he was gonna break that lock.

Anderson wasn't in the right position to finish it, thats why he gave it up. Position before submission. His hip was compromised and in an awkward position. He couldn't get enough torque with his hips because of how tangled he was under Chael. Furthermore, you don't need to GRAB your knee necessarily, Chael's leg is in a powerful position such that Anderson wouldn't have been able to wrench the arm out from behind it, that's why he gave it up. No use fighting for a kimura that's already gone when the leglock might be there.

The way Anderson was controlling that arm he could have pulled Chael's fingers from under his knee and torqued the shit out of that. At least that's how it looks to me. I don't know why he didn't at least make an attempt to do that. Maybe he was worried about his exposed ribs or twisting like that aggravated his ribs?

I don't buy that Silva would intentionally wait til the end to win, though. With all that trash talk I believe he would have wanted to beat Sonnen as quickly and cleanly as possible.

I'm goin to assume he thought Chael was going to try get the fight to the ground ASAP but got caught by surprise with that huge right and dropped him.. and after that Chael never gave him the chance to get set in his matrix type trance like he did vs previous opponents.. now that his kryptonite is known as a relentless wrestler with good cardio I want to see how he comes back.. On the other hand and wether or not I like to believe that Anderson is such a crazy person: Just from what I see, it looks like Anderson could have pulled through with that kimura had he extended his hips to stretch out Chael's base (but I'm nowhere near a black belt in BJJ, so what do I know). When it comes to the heel lock: I can not by any means imagine an MMA practicioner of Andersons caliber (legitimate blackbelt oder happy meal blackbelt) to not know, how to rip Chaels fucking heel off in that position. Anyone saying, that Ando didn't know what to do in this position is just nuts.

Do I think the fight was a work/fixed - No.

Did Anderson get old overnight? - Possibly

Was he really injured? - Dunno but his reaction time, movement and "Spider-Sense"/ ability to notice and avoid damage was non existent. Basically Anderson Silva wasn't fighting like Anderson Silva.

Was Silva fighting with a Submission or bust mentality? - Yes, which is funny when you think about his last fight against Maia where he refused to grapple (smart move imo). But seeing as Chael is notorious for wailing on people from guard only to get subbed. From his multiple sub attempts to the way he came out in the 5th, Anderson knew he had to finish and fully commit to any sub that came his way.


Did Anderson pull a "Brock-A-Dope"? - Either his ribs were truly injured and he would rather take it on the chin instead of a body shot or Anderson Silva let himself get beat up for 5 rounds to make the victory one for the ages...I Don't Know :(

Definitely nothing on that kimura - there's little wrist control, little leverage, and definitely not isolated. Chael's arm is still in a very natural position - it's not twisted outside its natural range of movement. Anderson Silva should have tried squeezing on to Sonnen's arm with his own left arm while twisting Sonnen's forearm a little while in the figure-four keylock position in order to properly isolate the arm to set up the kimura as he works his legs to establish a better leverage, instead of simply putting his hands in a figure four position on Sonnen's wrist and leave it at that.


As for the leglock, definitely nothing there too. Silva should have hold on tight on Sonnen's ankle, have his right arm hold on to the ankle with his left arm supporting the right arm, then bridge from his left shoulder hard and fast as he tries to cross his right leg over WHILE having his left leg push Sonnen's right leg away in order to keep Sonnen from basing up

anderson's technique was not that good, he didnt even try to butterfly hook chael, if that cage wasnt there all chael had to do was step over to side control, keep a control of anderson's arm and then step around for the far side armbar, i anderson tried that shit to a jacare for example and without the cage that would have been an armbar loss for the spider, poor technique imo

Chael blocked Anderson from twisting the arm and finishing the kimura. Realizing this, Anderson immediately tried to transition to a heel hook. I'm amazed that this is escaping some people.

I'm also amazed that people think a kimura is going to work on modern MMA. When's the last time you saw a kimura work? When Sakuraba did it 10 years ago? It's a low percentage hold that's usually just used to get a positional advantage.

Well my take on why Anderson didn't finish the Kimura, Sonnen seems to be pushing him into the mat as you can see SOnnen has his right arm holding Silva, as Sonnen is as to close to chest as he can be, follows Silva to the mat to hinder Silvas abilty to move, also Silva didnt have Sonnens body controlled in any way, he was flat on the mat(which is no-no if your trying to finish subs that require leverage SIlva simply had no other options to finish the sub). He could of tried to bench press Sonnen of him then turn into the Kimura but with the cage being on the side he would have to turn to, once agin no room to finish and for some reason if he did start to bench and turn Sonned, all he(sonnen) would have to do is just stop pinning SIlva and stand up to relive the pressure. Sonnen had so many different ways to escape with Silva being so flat he could of pushed of silvas left arm with his head, stepped over Silva's legs, pinning him to mat or just buy simply powering out.

And props for Anderson for pulling out a victory from the jaws of defeat and props to Sonnen for making it a great fight to, no rigs, no fixed fights, no luck, Anderson capitalized on Sonnens mistake and made him pay for it bottom line imho. Nice showcase of JJ in the last few mins of the fight, and like always never count a fighter out till its over.
Best comeback win in a title fight in my recent memory i doubt Silva planned to take a beating for 20+mins but he did and comeback to win. When is the rematch, we will see if he can finish the Kimura this time and if Cheal can finally defend triangle and armbars
