I've always liked Larry Merchant as much as I like my grandfather with Alzheimer's disease. It's been six years, and our entire family has learned to passively live with his diminishing memory. At this point, we don't pay much attention to what he says anymore because he doesn't realize what he's actually saying. Regardless, he's still capable of saying some pretty entertaining things when triggered by a passing skateboarder or the neighbor's barking dog, and the immature 10-year-old kid inside of me finds it mildly entertaining. Sometimes he barks back at the dog until the police are called; other times when his neighbor steps out, the barking goes on for hours or until one of them falls asleep. The doctor specifically asked that nobody interfere with his behavior, just to make sure he's taking his tranquilizer meds. Looking at the situation as a relative is sad, but as long as he's healthy, whatever keeps his blood pressure down is fine by me.

On that note, giving him a microphone and allowing him to commentate fights on live television would probably be as good an idea as letting Larry Merchant continue to do his job.

Dana White called Larry Merchant "senile" in a recent interview following Floyd Mayweather Jr's controversial win over Victor Ortiz. It seems appropriate that Larry merchant display the remaining lead in his pencil by firing back at Dana White & the sport of MMA.

"Anyone who can make a multimillion dollar business out of street fighting has to be respected." Merchant opened up during our recent conversation. "My opinion is that anyone is allowed to put up a tent, put on a show, and invite people to come. And obviously he's had a lot of success. Good for him.

"I don't watch it. I don't get a so-called sport in which you can have a 6-2 record and be called a world champion. I just don't appreciate the finer points of MMA."

Whether or not HBO ever fires Larry Merchant, or they decide to keep him around just for the ratings stemming from the verbal abuse aimed in his direction, one certainty is that even if he were fifty years younger, he still couldn't kick my grandfather's ass. [Source]

In the NFL you can have a 12-4 record and be world champ. In the NBA you can have a 61-21 record and be world champ. In MLB a 121-41 record would be historically good for a world champ. A golf, tennis, or racing sport star who wins 3 of 4 rounds or matches will win championships. Larry Merchant does not understand any other sports except boxing, where records are padded because nobody fights real opposition until they are 25-0. He was joking that he would like to fight Mayweather if he were younger, but I am sure Mayweather has fought worse.

I like both sports, its difficult to make an unbiased opinion on one when you are unwilling to open your eyes just a little.
Both are great sports, and alot of you guys source of boxing is dana white, and unlike what Dana has been telling you, Boxing is booming right now, its a billion dollar industry that's still growing.
Don't get me wrong, boxing fans are just as bad, they also have their closed minded perceptions of mma(i.e its all glass jaws dry humping each other)
We also have to get over this perception that boxing is just hugging each other for 12 rounds. It's not! It's actually pretty damn exciting, so just open your eyes a little.
I don't mean to come across snotty, acting as if know it all, I only began to like boxing 6 months ago, after receiving the same speech from a good friend.
All in all, just give boxing a chance if you still don't like it, fine, carry on as you may.

Couldn't agree more, I'm actually the opposite of you, I was a boxing fan my entire life, then my room mate introduced me to MMA 2 years ago, I've been an avid fan of both since, there's more than enough room for both sports

You know Larry and I have talked about his commentating skills but you know...he hasn't learned it yet...I haven't taught it to him. You can listen to Larry Merchant. Maybe he knows more than me. I don't know. But look...I'm a fighter. I've fought all my life. My opinion? Larry is ignorant and needs guidance. I can give that to him. I can teach him. That's just my humble opinion. Since boxing industry has been around for longer, they have a bigger fanbase, natrually, so that means a whole lot more tools and douches, also boxing fans seem really bitchy, that being said we as mma fans jump on and off trains more than hobbos in the winter
But yeah I agree with minotauro, he obviously won most productive commentor for a reason
