Is playing Destiny an inevitability?

Today is a special day. At the time of writing this, it’s Tuesday 09/09/14. Today is the day the world stands still for a single second, longingly gazing into the warming glow of the ether. Watching patiently as the clock ticks and tocks away, for the most important thing in their lives at this particular time. Bungie have launched Destiny, and it’s installing as we speak.

I’ll try and cull the dramatics for the time being, but this is a pretty big deal. I can’t remember the last time a new IP created this much buzz. Watch_Dogs certainly tried and made promises that left many with a bad taste in their mouths. It didn’t ever claim to be GTA, but their idea of what a living breathing world was couldn’t help but be compared to Rockstar’s masterpiece. That’s a shame, because it dulled what was an interesting story and great concept. I liked Watch_Dogs, it just wasn’t what we were all wanting from it. I doubt UbiSoft are deterred though, Watch_Dogs 2.0 should set things straight.

Back to Destiny. Bungie have been working on this for five million years. They’ve spent 60 billion dollars on it. This game will not fail, and do you know why I know that? Aside from those made up figures, it’s all down to investment and confidence. Activision have actually taken a pretty relaxed approach with Bungie here, they’re rumoured to have pumped around $500million into the development. Bungie have been given the freedom that Rockstar are usually given from Take Two. That $500million is designed to go a long way, it’s not for a sole gaming experience, it’s to give a brand new IP the best shot it can. Destiny will have DLC, it will have sequels, and you bet your arse Bungie are not stopping work today to take a moment and appreciate the buzz around this game as millions boot it up for the first time.

Where however does the confidence come from though? Bungie have already given people a taste of this game in a small capacity, in both the Alpha and Betas tests made available earlier this year. I say small, the beta netted close to 5million active users. They’ve taken feedback, and they’re aiming to launch strong. This is the most pre-ordered new IP ever, that’s not surprising. What is surprisingly however is Bungie’s decision not to send out review copies of the game. It seems like a strange act in this age we now live whereby a review score can make or break you; Bungie are confident though and I’ll tell you why. They’ve taken a risk here and want even the reviewers to play it as they intended the game to be. It’s not a fair representation of the game playing on dead servers, so we’re all going to be playing in a living, breathing universe together. That’s exciting, and it’s a damn bold move. It could backfire, but I’m doubtful it will.

So the next step is up to you, I guess. It’s time for us all to strap on some big space boots, grab some sort of blaster and fulfil our Destiny. There’s murmurs of a Livestream, if you’re interested. I’m about to get stuck in, I’ll report back with a review when I’m done if someone doesn’t beat me to it.
