A Logical Argument to Warband Being the King of Multiplayer Slashers

I’ve had an affinity for multiplayer or arcade games for most of my life now, to the point where it used to frustrate some of my friends growing up that I couldn’t get into Resident Evil or Silent Hill, but would spend hours playing Soul Calibur as Voldo just so that I could troll everyone the next time that we all sat down and played. The same could be said for when we’d play Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena, where I’d always be playing those games to the point of it not being fun for them to play against me.

Now, I love games with a well-done story, but the appeal of multiplayer games is that you can sit down for 20 minutes or so, play, then get up and leave without having to feel like you have unresolved issues. Since I built a new PC for myself last year I’ve found myself deeply in love with these multiplayer slashers, like Chivalry, War of the Roses and Mount & Blade Warband. Now that I’ve been playing around with them for a long time, I can honestly say that Mount & Blade: Warband is by far the best, still. The irony is that it’s from 2010.

I’ve had a few people ask me why. Why do I play a game that isn’t graphically as impressive as Chivalry, a game that doesn’t have as many people playing it, hell, a game that is clearly not going to be updated anymore. The answer is simple: Mount & Blade: Warband plays like a dream. It’s challenging, rewarding, fun, chaotic and most of the people who play regularly are great. It has a great community of nerds that are definitely worth getting to know and play against.

I find myself most drawn to playing Siege mode, which is a chaotic mode where one side defends a map, the other attacks. The gameplay, even after all of these years, still feels brilliant and deep, with you needing to learn different strategies against different types of players. As someone who has trained striking extensively in the past, it feels a lot like that. You have to anticipate your opponent’s moves, look for patterns, look for holes. Sometimes you just have to go for broke, too.

This video I made the other day to highlight why I love this game so much. This is my primer into Siege mode.
