Khabib signs contract to fight Cowboy Cerrone, seems not legit

On Twitter today, Khabib Nurmagomedov jabbed at Cowboy Cerrone, claiming he has signed a contract to fight the borderline overactive lightweight.  But the contact, written using a blue pen on some grid-lined paper, is likely not binding.  Indeed, the gesture, while poetic in a doodly sense, is probably completely meaningless, given Khabib still remains free to wander the hills of Dahestan like a contractually free nomad in a gigantic furry hat.

Despite never actually having a physical confrontation, the two have fought on social media for months.  Unfortunately, Khabib was injured before their last proposed fight.

“This is the third time him and I have signed to fight and the third time that he’s pulled out,” he told Mike Bohn of MMAJunkie.  “I’m kind of bummed. I was really looking forward to that fight. But hey, what are you going to do? It’s bad luck. We were supposed to fight earlier in the year. One was called off because of Ramadan or whatever he has to do for his religion. He didn’t want to take the fight because it would put him during that period. The time before that I don’t really remember the logistics of it. Now he’s injured.”

But despite the Universe voicing its repeated disagreement, Cowboy speculated in January that Khabib would be his next opponent. “Talking with (UFC President) Dana (White) and (UFC CEO) Lorenzo (Fertitta), I think Khabib’s going to be what’s next for sure,” he said. “I’m just going to take some time off and just get ready and stay ready and hopefully Khabib will be ready…I don’t know. Whatever’s next, I’m willing to take up and fight.”

And on January 20th, Khabib suggested the two fight at UFC 187.  Cowboy responded with a couple thumbs-up emoticons.

So although Khabib’s unilateral contract is a bit silly, the fight isn’t, and seems inevitable.   That’s great news, given it is one of the most anticipated pairings in recent UFC history.
