Georges St. Pierre vacates his UFC welterweight title in order to take some time off

I think we should all give Georges St. Pierre a slow round of applause for announcing that he will vacate the UFC welterweight belt to take some time to enjoy life. This afternoon GSP and the UFC held a conference call to announce something 'the fans wanted to hear' according to Dana. Some predicted it would be a rematch against Johny Hendricks, but I (along with a few people) heard from sources that it would be an imminent 'leave of absence' from MMA while vacating his UFC welterweight title. I've also heard from sources that GSP's hear just isn't in the sport anymore. The guy is burned out -- and we completely understand.

Throughout the call, GSP was teasing that he would come back to the sport but we all know that's a veiled lie. St. Pierre is finished with MMA. Jesus Christ has a better chance of returning to Earth than GSP returning to the UFC.

However we all know what Georges St. Pierre was avoiding -- the UFC poster curse. Retirement is the only way to duck the metaphysical realm of poster jinxes.

The Aliens are calling him back to the home planet of Riddum.
+37 # Lefthea D. Kick 2013-12-13 11:52
Good for him going out on his own terms. Also Robbie Lawler vs Hendricks is going to be the biggest slugfest of all time.
+7 # bayzel22 2013-12-13 16:50
Yes!!!!! Agree, agree, agree

I'm gonna miss GSP and those lovely fruit of the looms. Got them in every color
0 # GONZO 2013-12-13 11:53
Love them both, but I want Hendricks to get his belt. It's gonna be a shoot-out.
+18 # jt33 2013-12-13 12:21
first.. the poster curse came true.. the judges just didint know about it..

more importantly though.. even though im not a huge gsp fan i respect him as a fighter and martial artist. no matter how you feel about him its undeniable that he is one of the legends of mma. whether he decides to come back or not..ill leave that up to him to decide and wont speculate but i hope during his time off he can find some peace..hes earned it.
+6 # jt33 2013-12-13 12:23
also.. i guess i need to start saving up for 171. its was already a decent card but add hendricks/lawle r and maybe condit?.. GREAT card.
+7 # bayzel22 2013-12-13 16:52
I think they will try to match Condit up with Diaz for the next shot at the belt. If Diaz is willing to come back this card could be the greatest card of all time!!
+4 # jt33 2013-12-13 19:03
i hope so.. it makes sense to me. lets just hope mr diaz thinks so too
+4 # bayzel22 2013-12-13 21:03
A rematch against Condit for a shot at the belt without having to face GSP and a possible rematch against Lawler. Man, if he doesn't come back for that, he isn't ever coming back! Lol. I really hope that's what the UFC tries to do.
+15 # CC 2013-12-13 12:24
So what happens with the UFC curse when Anderson KO's Weidman?
+9 # Lawlc@tz 2013-12-13 12:38
When he comes back...that's gonna be a big draw. I bet Hendricks is so pissed though..
+2 # bayzel22 2013-12-13 17:01
Pissed at getting a title shot? Probably not

-3 # pride_power 2013-12-13 12:49
shame hes gone, probably be better if Hendricks just got the dc that he deserved now. I'm not so sure why Zeus thinks he wont come back though. I think he will. fighters always look back and want one more go, especially ones that retire like this.
+19 # mookiestick 2013-12-13 13:00
I'd like to see Lawler win this match up. Johnnys tantrum is gonna be epic!
+5 # Mr.Doctor 2013-12-13 13:25
Holy shit. Imagine how that would go.
+5 # Ravelife 2013-12-13 13:32
So in a couple years we see GSP come back and Rory is champ, what you wanna make a bet GSP is going to MW and during his time off Anderson Silva retires?
0 # Judo Mike 2013-12-14 22:53
Dude, he is too small for MW.

If I was him I wouldn't want any part of Woodley, Hendrix or Lawler either.... He is not coming back & he is not the greatest of all time. The guy never challenged himself, he never even looked for a finish after getting KO'd by Matt Serra & when he actually tried to finish against Dan Hardy his technique was so bad that he looked like a white belt. He had earned his original fan base from finishing guys, He earned his bandwagon fan base from laying on guys in order to "win". That's why he draws so much ire from those of us who loved him in the beginning, when no one knew who he was. He is retired. He is not coming back. He is scared to DEATH of losing & this is the only way he wanted to lose the belt. He knows that he is gonna get handled by the UFC's WW contenders so he decided to cut & run. It's kind of cowardly to go out like this. He fought BJ Penn (a natural 155'er) & beat him & everyone freaked out & said my god he's the greatest etc etc. When talks of him fighting Silva came up he dodged them, but that can only last for so long. Times up on that either you fight Silva & actually challenge yourself or leave the sport. Everyone is talking about how GSP has taken "damage over the years". Where? When? He layed on guys to get the W. He took next to 0% damage during those (7-8) fights over the last 4-5 years. He is retiring to do other things... His legacy will be a guy who used to be a killer finisher, until he was finished himself. Then he resorted to L&P snoozfest judges decision W's. That's not the legacy of a fighter who is the greatest of all time. Anderson Silva is the greatest of all time.

Anderson is the GOAT but GSP is the "GWWOAT" and there's no other WW in sight who can do what GSP has done in his career. WW may be like pre-Jon Jones LHW now , with couple of guys knocking each other out in title fights and no chance of putting few defences together.
+7 # jt33 2013-12-13 13:42
yo zues.. layzie.. someone.. whats the status on diaz right now? this opens up a lot of possibilities for him.. rematch the condit on the same card? winner of lawler/hendrick s? maybe even lawler if he loses.. winner of rory/maia.. let us know!
+4 # BlueDaBaDee 2013-12-13 13:45

MMA fans can be so annoying. The media especially. Hey, lets bother GSP with a million questions that he JUST answered. Leave the guy alone. He said he wants to take time off, and you keep asking him when he's coming back. HE DOESN"T KNOW. Then, you wanna talk about who is gonna fight who based on rankings. RANKINGS THAT THE MEDIA (who have no idea how to rank fighters) made. They had Rory Macdonald above Robbie Lawler AFTER Robbie beat Macdonald. Makes no sense. You also have everyone always talking about the title. The title this and the title that. Is it for the title? I want my title shot. STFU. You jump on everyone's nuts when they're hot and comin up. You beg for them to get a shot at a title. They win the title, and right away you start talking about who's the guy to beat him. We gotta get someone to beat this guy etc...

Most of these people have never even fought and have no idea what it's like. They don't know what goes on for months leading up to a fight. They don't know about the injuries or the sacrifice. They don't know personal business. Most of these people jumped on the UFC bandwagon after the sport was popularized in 2006. They don't know the history. They think Robbie Lawler is a new fighter coming out of nowhere, meanwhile, he's been fighting all over the world for years. All of these critics who sit behind a desk or a tv and talk about what a guy should do or how he should act. They talk about being classy and respectful etc... If you want classy and respectful, GO WATCH GOLF. This is the FIGHT business. You're dealing with fighters. Fighters should quit playing into their games, also. The majority give cookie cutter answers and the personalities are so predictable. Very few of them say what they really think and feel. Those are the guys you need for your company. Guys that bring spice. That's why I like the Diaz bros. That's why I like Chael. You gotta have guys like that. They make the sport so much more interesting.

hey right after GSP won against Hendricks I started a thread on the boards saying how the poster curse was over and no one said jack shit!
I thought i'd get some damn points for that at least...

anyway, that curse was over with that fight, end of story! GSP wins again!

and Rippie, the stuff you're writing doesn't hold water anymore coz his matches with Condit, Diaz and Hendricks were all good fights where GSP gave it.
He fought hard, took/gave hard shots and showed tons of heart.

He fought the best of the best during his entire career (tho I'm not a Hardy fan) and you didn't.
+2 # rippie74 2013-12-16 11:39
Doesn't hold water anymore, which means according to you @ one time they did? Nice. Also Hardy? Who gives a shit about Dan Hardy? The Condit fight was a takedown & do nothing fest. As well as the Diaz fight. He didn't try to pass & advance his position, nothing. He was just trying to survive the 5 rounds & get the W based off of takedowns alone. In his last fight (against Hendrix) his face was turned into hamburger as a result of "significant strikes" landed by Johnny. He himself landed a few shots here & there & yes it was a close fight in which many within the MMA world (including Dana White) believe he got a gift of a W. Bottom line He finished BJ Penn & Matt Serra (2 natural 155'ers) since then he hasn't even looked for a finish. Just score a take down, lay on a guy, throw a few elbows, that's it. If he fought like he fought against Frank Trigg & Matt Hughes then we'd all be agreement that he has made a pretty strong case to be considered GOAT, but that hasn't happened & it's never gonna happen. The time for that was over the past 5,6,7 years. What's he gonna do sit @ home on the couch & eat potato chips for a few years. No. He's moving on to other$ making ventures. He's not coming back. He's done.
-1 # Hooha 2013-12-18 14:02
He does more than just score takedowns and throw some elbows. His striking, esp. his jab (Kos's broken orbital)? Who made the Superman punch famous? When he's on top he throws all kinds of punches, tries for subs. He was just fighting the best of the best all the time ('cept for Hardy, I agree with you about that).

He said in the most recent interview in "Journal de Montreal" that he's probably coming back, just can't say when. He loves to compete, he says.

And my "anymore" comment is just me trying to be open-minded. In his fight against Shields he got a bad eye injury, a groin-pull against Alves - I defended him but still had to bite my tongue since many folks thought the performances weren't so great.

To each his own Rippie74. At least GSP went out in an exciting way.

Wow, mad respect for GSP. Going out at the top, good for him. What a credit to mma
