Rousimar Palhares' ankle lock on Mike Pierce was so brutal that the UFC ruled it 'unsportsmanlike'

Rousimar Palhares' ankle lock on Mike Pierce was so brutal that the UFC ruled it 'unsportsmanlike'

Shortly after Paul Harris' herculean ankle lock over Mike Pierce, Dana White announced that Palhares would not get the submission of the night bonus due to the lock being held too long. UFC officials have also deemed it to be 'unsportsmanlike' and they're investigating it with a potential for additional punishment.

After watching it again it seems like when the ref jumped in, Palhares let go of the sub so I'm not quite sure why the UFC is reacting so severe. Check out the full finish below and decide for yourself.

It kind of sounds like you can hear Pierce's bones grinding into mush at :31. Brutal.
-20 # SST 2013-10-09 23:59
that cunt deserved it for talking all that smack. what puss for tapping out before Paul Harris even started cranking.
+13 # STFU Faggot 2013-10-10 07:10
I know this is a troll, but STFU. If you wait for the pain on a heel hook, its too fucking late. Try hitting the mats and talking less bitch
-11 # SST 2013-10-10 11:28
your a puss just like pierce. I eat heel hooks like delicious asian snacks punk. everyone knows bjj is the gateway drug for sucking caulk
+33 # TMD 2013-10-09 21:50
That's not an ankle lock, it's a heel hook. Big difference.
-30 # Zack U. 2013-10-09 21:53
Pardon my French but that's fucking stupid. Frank Mir broke 2 arms, Nogueira's and Sylvia's and got a bonus for each as far as I know.
+37 # Common Sense 2013-10-09 21:58
Yes but Sylvia never tapped, and Nogueira tapped after his arm broke.

Pierce was tapping on his leg like a maniac, the ref jumps in and starts tearing physically pulling Pierce's leg away while Pierce is tapping on the ref and shouting "TAP!!"

.... so it's a little different...
-8 # Diego 2013-10-09 22:39
Nog didnt tap out
+14 # Howie Feltersnatch 2013-10-10 02:27
Yeah difference was pierce was tapping out, not the 1st time for Palhares
+23 # mmalove 2013-10-09 21:55
You aren't sure why the UFC is acting so severe? Are you drunk? He held that thing for a good 3 seconds after the ref stopped it. That could do career ending damage. Give him the babalu treatment. He was obviously sticking it to pierce because he didnt like his pre-fight comments
-4 # SST 2013-10-10 11:30
name one fighter who's career has ended from a heel hook

+16 # MisterFister 2013-10-09 21:57
Its because like all Brazilians he held onto it for WAY too long. These savages do this just to be dicks. They have a reputation for being asshole like that.
+22 # Dano 2013-10-09 22:03
This is not the first time Palhares has done something like this. During UFC 111 he held a heel hook for too long. Was suspended for 90 days. What a nutjob.
+26 # guppy 2013-10-09 22:07
Paul Harris is a peanut brain. It's probably not his fault. He's just stupid. I've seen him do this in BJJ tournaments on the web and piss people off. He's just dumb...
+5 # turtle 2013-10-10 16:16
This is true. He's not strong, he's retard strong - literally. And retard crazy, and retard ugly, and retard sexy...
+16 # AFrontKicktotheFace 2013-10-09 22:09
Zues you must be drunk. That was so blatant, he even further tweaked it right before letting go finally as the ref was using all his might to pry him off.
-4 # Hominicks Hematoma 2013-10-09 22:16
I'm surprised his fuckin' knee didn't pop, but then again I'm surprised I didn't either... ;-)

Ref says Stop and you let go = Fine.

Ref says Stop, then jumps on you, grabs your arms and legs, looks you directly in the face and shouts STOP!= Not Fine.
+13 # Vapekush 2013-10-10 00:50
As someone who is recovering from a knee injury, shit like this enrages me. Palhares seems to enjoy crippling people and I hope he gets ktfo in his next match.
+5 # Pwnerer 2013-10-10 02:40
Dana White should KO this SHITBIRD straight out of the UFC by cutting up his contract.

Fuck off to the bush leagues son
+15 # SnakeJake 2013-10-10 03:20
Anybody else see what he did after he finally let go? He thanked God. It wasn't Palhares who made that career-ender possible. No. It was God. :-?

Getting KO'd by Lombard must have made him (more) retarded.
-2 # mike Q 2013-10-10 04:38
these comments are hillarious,
+5 # Dr. Science 2013-10-10 06:37
I think it's time for someone to turn the tables and end Paul Harris' career. Dude is a fucking ape and this is too much to let stand.
+4 # layzboybc 2013-10-10 08:19
This guy has done this time and time again he holds onto his leg locks WAYYYY TOOO long and continually cranks on them. He has done it not only in the UFC but also BJJ tournaments. I personally believe that this guy should be shown the door by the UFC this being a repeat problem that has serious career changing implications for the other fighter.
PS: Its not like when he doesnt do this his fights run smoothly he may just decide midfight that he won and climb up on the cage in a victory celebration. Then have to be called down and told the fight isnt over. LOL
+3 # #whatwouldlegolasdo 2013-10-10 09:10

Too often this has held on to his brutal leg locks for too long, only to put his hands up after letting go as if to say, "What?! I let go!", reminding me very much of soccer players who trip opponents and pull their hands back in the same manner.

Palhares is likely one of those guys at the gym/dojo who doesn't understand control. You know the kind - go too hard during practice and ending up hurting others.
+3 # SST 2013-10-10 11:34
you should see him pet kittens
0 # ironman3 2013-10-10 08:54
holy...snap.... paul harris is built like a tree stump..another leg for his colection
+6 # jt33 2013-10-10 10:10
a history of it spanning his bjj and mma career- check
holding on after the guy tapped- check
holding on after the guy yells to stop- check
keep holding when the ref grabs you- check
crank the ankle one final time before letting go- check
paul harris sub of of the night- no check
-5 # C Brutananadilewski 2013-10-10 10:14
Held too long, but not as bad as he has done in the past. I have to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that because Pierce had slipped out of one of his locks just seconds before, he was really locking down to ensure that it worked. Now to all the people claiming he is an asshole and trying to injure people let me reiterate the comments of some people before me. Frank Mir broke two arms, Rousey broke a few arms and what happens after that? Whether the person taps at any point or not we get a "woah how crazy is that" response and very little criticism of the person that just hurt the other fighter and laid them up. The one thing I need to hear to be mad at Palhares is that Mike Pierce was injured, and that's the one thing I don't hear. Let's be clear Palhares shouldn't have held it as long as he did and he is an asshole for doing it, but don't think for a second that anyone gives a shit about fighter health that isn't the fighter or their family. If you cared about their health you wouldn't watch in the first place. What you can make a claim to is caring about unnecessary injury, which right now it sounds like there was none. So everyone get off your soap box and calm down Palhares is a wound up asshole when he fights, not the anti-christ.
+4 # Toothy 2013-10-10 10:51
I'm all for cutting Paul Harris after last night; however, I would be willing to listen to proposals if they incorporate the referee being armed with a tranquilizer gun that would be fired at Toquinho's neck instead of verbal/physical attempts at restraint
+4 # Jman 2013-10-10 12:18

YES! Excellent decision.
+7 # Ryu 2013-10-10 15:25
Now he can ruin twice as many legs in Bellator.
0 # roll with me STFU!!! 2013-10-13 18:53
For one it was a herculene heel hook, and even a perfected he'll hook is one of the easiest subs to reverse and scramble. Second a heel hook takes a rediculious amount of torque and about 30 seconds of that full torque to feel it. STFU [censored]OT come roll with me and I make you tap before Pierce even contemplated it. That'swhy sexy ass SST shut you up instantly cause your another pretend BJJ wannabe
