Conspiracy Theory Alert: People believe FightMetric altered the UFC 165 stats by 54% to favor Jon Jones

Conspiracy Theory Alert: People believe FightMetric altered the UFC 165 stats by 54% to favor Jon Jones

So immediately after UFC 165 I received emails and tweets about FightMetric allegedly altering fight stats in favor of Jon Jones. Initially I thought nothing of it, and days later my opinion still hasn't changed. However since people have been abuzz about this entire 'FightMetric UFC 165 conspiracy,' I thought it was only fair that it make MiddleEasy -- as every appropriate MMA conspiracy theory has in the past.

The root behind this conspiracy theory is actually two-fold. A site called 'MMAPlanet' claims that FightMetric actually skews their statistics pretty frequently, but only if a UFC bout meets the following guidelines (quoted directly from the site):

  • At 100% of the times the difference has been huge it has been during controversial decisions.
  • The change has always favored the winner in a controversial decision.
  • The winner in the controversial decisions we have noticed has always been American
  • The fights we have noticed have always been american vs foreign fighter
  • Judges have been American judging from their names

So it's clear that at the very heart of this FightMetric conspiracy theory is a strong claim that stats are altered to favor American fighters. Interesting.

A phone screen cap has also been floating around the internet showing the finals stats of the main event of UFC 165 with Jon Jones winning the unanimous decision, but Alexander Gustafsson significantly out-striking him.

Now a photo of the final, or 'edited,' stats show that Jon Jones had more strikes than Alexander Gustafsson, leading some people to believe that FightMetrics removed 77 strikes from Gustafsson and added 17 to Jon Jones, representing a 54% shift in strike statistics.

OK, so let's play along in the belief that FightMetric is run by a crew of shape-shifting reptilians that are out to control the planet through means of mathematics. If they did add strikes to Jon Jones' stats, how would that possibly change the outcome of the judges' score cards? Was the alteration just a tool to get people to accept the unanimous decision in favor of Jon Jones? If FightMetric did hold a conspiracy, then it's a dumb one -- and they should be banned from making conspiracies from now until Miley Cyrus turns into a confused, middle-aged woman.

Zeus is represented by Galactus in his avatar image because he has an immature obsession with Marvel when they went all sci-fi back in the mid 80s. Come on guys...its Tuesday night. M.E is JUST getting on this? This was being discussed immediately after the event.

My question is, why doesnt someone just recount the fucking strikes already. Its Tuesday night! Im too lazy to do it, but Im sure someone must've figured this out by now.

The top one is likely photoshopped. I can't imagine that both fighters ONLY landed significant strikes over the course of 5 rounds...

obviously the first one isnt correct. total strikes and significant strikes are exact the same. what are the odds that that happens for both fighters? especially in one which featured the jab so heavily. just because they later correct the numbers doesnt mean there is a conspiracy. it just means they fucked up entering numbers on the computer.

also ufc are notorious for putting typos in everything

i mean they even had this one during the fight. http://i.imgur.com/WTFSPgT.png i might be wrong but no way gus hit jones 70 times more in the face before the 5th

If you are gripped by this obvious conspiracy. You might want to go here too:

Grow up. Fightmetric stats are so unimportant that it would hardly be worth changing them. Their stats are not (repeat not) used by the referees, judges or commissions so have no effect on anything. Hardly any fans read them and they don't shape popular opinion on something that everyone just watched for themselves anyway. They don't affect bets either and no bets are taken on them.

It is more likely if anything changed that they were correcting an error. As for repetitive changes, we have some guy's word on it (the site gives no numbers, sources or examples of previous changes).

A company trying to hide their fuckup - believable. The same company being paid off by the secret governement black ops chemtrail rand corporation bilderbergers to have some kind of non-effect on a goddamn fistfight - not at all believable.

Exactly.

That's how most conspiracy theories get started these days. The media is so focused on being the first to break a story that they often put out incorrect or conflicting information so later on when they have to change it to reflect the truth there are always conspiracy nuts who come out of the woodwork saying it's proof of a cover up. Somehow it's more believable to these people that there is a vast conspiracy controlling everything instead of just that people tend to fuck up in the heat of the moment.

If anything Gustafssons hits would be harder to count in real time because he throws them combinations so fast.

The problem is not Fightmetric.
The problem was judges scoring a missed oblique kick that landed with 0 impact on the front of the thigh the same as a straight to the jaw or a jab to the nose.

but now it favors someone the majority of us dislike, it's definitely fucking rigged, isn't it?

the first photo looks to me to be obviously edited, the total strikes and significant strikes are exactly the same, not every strike thrown was a significant one as suggested in that photo. someone has altered that photo.

I are you fckn stupid or just didnt watch the fight? Goldberg said Gustafsson had close to 200 significant strikes landed.

The UFC itself had an image that said 88 to 16 headstrikes landed in Alex favor.

Let's try to get the facts straight.

The first fight card (120 - 191) was the stats displayed by UFC at the end of the fight. This is also the stats the commentators referred to during the fight. In the third round you can hear them saying that Gustafsson got 120 significant strikes. After the end of the fight they announced that he had almost 200 significant strikes. You can just watch the fight and listen to confirm this. The picture is not altered and it is not a typo.

The second fight card appeared about 30 minutes after the fight. I guess this is done after a final recount, when Fightmetrics has had a chance to have closer look at the fight. The controversial issue here is that it favors Jones by such a large margin.

what about the takedowns though? Gustaffson took Jones down more that once and one pic says 1of8, the other 1of5... I call bullshit on both of them

Gustafsson put Jones on the mat twice: once with a takedown in the 1st & once with a trip in the 5th off a caught-kick. For whatever reason, FightMetric doesn't count that kind of caught-kick-tri p (is there a correct term for that's not so cumbersome for that?) as a takedown.

im not claiming conspiracy.. it would have to actually accomplish something tangible for that. i just think its shady that only gus lost strikes off his total.. so your telling me they went back and checked and not only did jon jones land every single shot they saw the first time, but actually added to it... meanwhile they were EIGHTY strikes wrong on gus, but he didnt land anything they missed... if its just as simple as fightmetic being garbage then it shouldnt be used in the first place..

Allowing votes down on this site instead of just +1s or likes was a mistake. Way too many cunts, lots of good comments here are flooded with negs by dipshit haters.

Anyone who knows MMA scoring knows Gus won, there is no such thing as 'round stealing' in MMA rules but a SINGLE strike in the 4th round after being dominated and all these ass hats call it 4th for Jones. Bull fucking shit.

This is a sport with judging criteria that was largely ignored on this fight, and they fucking DID change the stats from what was being reported during the fight.

I can agree that Jon Jones won, but they have him out striking Gus in every round on fight metric. Now I ask you guys who saw that fight, do feel that Jon landed more strikes than Gus in every round? Can we honestly say he out struck Gus in the 1st? The fishiness is undeniable.

People don't understand that you could land 1000 strikes in one round over the other person and have a better total at the end. .......but what about the other rounds that they got out struck in. I swear I hate reading newbie comments. I grew up watching boxing and it teaches you have to score rounds correctly. You hit someone with 20 jabs and you get caught with 15 straights or hooks. Guess what? you lost that round.

Chrislarsson is 100% correct:

In addition, Gustafsson took Jones down twice, NOT just once. He caught one of Jon Jones kicks and then tripped him---that is an obvious takedown. Only a simpleton would argue otherwise.
