Renzo Gracie wants to get back into the Octagon

One year ago, the greatest MMA-related thing on Twitter happened; Renzo Gracie turned into a vigilante, beat up some would-be muggers and did it all while tweeting. While there are some doubts about how real the event was, we can all admit, it was insanely badass. We haven’t heard much from the 46-year-old since then, he’s been busy with coaching and other things, but he apparently wants to get back into the cage. If you don’t remember, Renzo signed a six-fight contract back in December of 2009. He fought Matt Hughes a couple of months later, in a fight where he was leg kicked to death in the third round in a very uneventful fight

Gracie explained his desire to get back into the cage on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani:

“Believe it, there’s nothing that I want to do more than to be back in the cage, to be back fighting. I just love doing that. Life has been pushing me everywhere but in that direction, but now I’m getting so tired and frustrated with everything else that I’m going to just bury myself into a mat and train the whole day, and do what I love, which is training and fighting. For sure, I’ll be fighting again. Man, I’ve just begun training again and I’m feeling good. I had a few problems in the family and now I got everything tuned up, everything is getting better. So I’m looking to be in top shape in three or four months from now, and from there I’ll set up a date.”

Renzo hasn’t stepped into the octagon or fought in three years, so if he were to get a fight, ring rust would definitely be a factor in the fight. And the landscape of the sport has changed so much since he fought Hughes. Think about it: Anderson Silva was still the invincible champion; Jon Jones had just broke Brandon Vera’s face and Chael Sonnen was about to evolve into the American Gangster.

It’s crazy. We’ll just have to see if Dana White and co. will give Renzo a fight.
