Sunday Wrassling Fix: Lucha Underground Tag and NJPW MOTY Contender

You guys need more good wrestling in your life.

There, I said it. There are going to be people that disagree with that, who say that they need no wrestling in their life, but I find those people to be patently wrong. It just means that they haven’t seen the right wrestling yet, that’s all. WWE was oddly good this week, which is something that I feel everyone should know and the WWE Network is free for the entire month of November, which means you should probably sign up for it and at least check out some old PPVs or something. I mean, as long as you are in the United States, everyone else is kinda in a weird place with that, sorry.

Anyway, Lucha Underground this past Wednesday proved that once again it was worth watching. This time around I had my DVR set and caught the entire show and while parts of it were kind of cheesey and weird, overall it was worth watching. They are really pushing Sexy Star hard, which is both kind of weird and kind of cool, but not being done in an insulting manner, which is interesting. The best match from this week was a tag bout that played off of the end of last week’s show featuring Prince Puma vs. Johnny Mundo.

Kudos for featuring dudes who can wrestle and for keeping a storyline going for two weeks, which is already better than what a promotion like TNA struggles to do.

In the wee hours of Saturday morning here in the US there was a select few of us who stayed up to ungodly hours to catch New Japan Pro Wrestling’s iPPV Power Struggle with one thing in mind; Shinsuke Nakamura and Katsuyori Shibata were gonna wrestle for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship. Well, that match was pretty good, but it got completely, utterly blown out of the water by the insanity that was the NEVER Openweight Championship bout between Champion Tomohiro Ishii and challenger Hirooki Goto. I’m steadfast in believing that Nakamura is the best wrestler alive today, but 38 year old Tomohiro Ishii has had the most incredible 2014 imaginable. His 2014 is a year that most wrestlers would only dream of having, with nothing but crazy, Match of the Year contenders left and right. This latest one, though? I dunno if it is just the afterglow, but this could very well be the match of the year, hands down.

This is the kind of stuff that keeps my love for wrestling alive in a world of awful gimmicks, bad storylines and mediocre matches. This is just insanity. It’s the kind of stuff that even a non-fan can watch and say, “oh my god, they are really beating the piss out of each other” and find themselves mesmerized by.
