The Yakuza have finally entered the digital world, and it’s amateur

Everyone’s done it. Back when Angelfire and Geocities gave you a free website, we were all at it. Flashing .gifs, music that auto-played when the page loaded and extreme overuse of html tags. The visitor counter at the bottom of the page was almost mandatory, and a badge of pride for many. I can’t remember what I made websites about to be honest, but I’m certain they were terrible. I think one of them was a tribute to Stone Cold Steve Austin (hell yeah!) and another was for my soccer team. I know quite a few people who made a site for him and his friends and different “clubs” they would form actually. Geocities spawned many short-lived car appreciation clubs at my school.

Of course, people still do this, but they just make a page or a closed group on Facebook. In retrospect, that’s maybe what the Yamaguchi-Gumi should have done. Instead, Japan’s largest criminal organization has created this site. I feel bad slamming their efforts when the website clearly has a noble cause at heart. Google has translated the site name as “Drug Expulsion of Land Purification Alliance” and Vice tells us, the whole organization was set up to fight against the amphetamine abuse prevalent in Japan after World War II.

Why they actually need a website is unclear but the thoughts are that it is to serve as a recruitment tool. Despite being the largest such organization in Japan, their numbers have been steadily falling. It’s quite possible that they will have an influx of Japanese web designers looking to join their ranks soon enough, judging by the message at the bottom which Google have translated to say “We are a complete amateur in regard homepage. I think whether there is also a part somewhat unsightly. Please forgive. Come and have a point of notice something please e-mail. For inexperienced, it may take some time to reply.. Please forgive.” We forgive you for your crimes to web design, we must assume you were busy with human trafficking and prostitution to take up a few Code Academy lessons. [Source]
