Dogecoin has raised $30,000 to send the Jamaican bobsleigh team to the Winter Olympics

Last week, a friend at work showed me the Jamaican Bobsleigh team’s webpage and I have to be honest, I thought it was a joke. A number of the pages don’t work and the design has come straight outta 2001. Then I read the posts and I realized it was actually real. Further Googling led me more to news about the real team than the movie Cool Runnings, which was the most surprising thing. Putting ‘Jamaican Bobsleigh team’ into Google and not coming out with at least an image of Sanka was disappointing.

As if to display its tremendous might, the internet likes to make ridiculous things a reality, like Rick Astley. So appropriately, money has come flooding into the team’s PayPal account and into crowdfunding campaigns on Indiegogo and Crowdtilt to help the team get to the Sochi Winter Olympics Another ridiculous thing which has come into existence thanks to the internet is Dogecoin.

The Dogecoin community on Reddit have seen the funding drive for the Jamaican Bobsleigh team as a great opportunity for some publicity for their cryptocurrency and raised approximately $30,000 for the Jamaicans. The team were aiming for between $40,000-80,000 to get to Sochi and through combined sources they have raised around $56,000 which is enough to get them on their way. The only way this story could get better is if one member of the team has a pet egg.
